About Us

The Legal Services Department functions as CPUT’s in-house legal services and resides within the Registrar’s Division under the management of the Deputy Registrar Governance and Legal Services. The Legal Services Department provides legal advisory services to the university’s management, and academic- and support service departments. The Legal Services Department does not provide legal advice or representation to individual university employees or students on any personal matters.

Services offered by the Legal Services Department include:

  • Vetting and drafting of contracts (except research related contracts which are dealt with by the Technology Transfer Office (TTO))
  • Legal advice including advice on compliance with legislation and institutional policies
  • Litigation support to the University (except employment related matters)
  • Acting as the University’s prosecutors in student disciplinary proceedings in accordance with Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Rules for students
  • Assistance with the review of the Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Rules for students
  • Vetting of University Policies
