"We are thrilled to launch FID Pulse, your premier source for news, stories, and perspectives from the Faculty of Informatics and Design. As the heartbeat of the faculty, our mission is to deliver timely, relevant, and engaging content that showcases the vibrant diversity of our community. FID Pulse is more than just a newsletter – it is a dynamic multimedia platform that combines the talents of journalism students to create a rich and immersive experience. Our platform will feature articles, podcasts, photos, and graphics, offering a multifaceted view of the faculty. Through compelling stories, we aim to spark conversation, resonate with our audience, and foster a sense of belonging. FID Pulse also serves as a training ground for the next generation of media professionals. Journalism students gain hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, and the chance to showcase their talent to a wider audience. Join us on this exciting journey as we redefine campus journalism. Your feedback, ideas, and contributions are invaluable in making FID Pulse an indispensable part of campus life. Thank you for your support ... more "This under-representation of women in leadership roles in universities is not just an issue locally, but also globally. Inequality and lack of inclusion of women is an ongoing challenge that derails, slows down and obstructs women advancing into leadership roles. “I am disappointed in the slow pace in getting women in higher roles in higher education in South Africa and globally,” says Professor Tembisa Ngqondi, dean of the Faculty of Information and Design at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. “The under-representation of women in leadership positions is not of their making. Gatekeeping is blocking women from climbing the ladder. The media labelling of women immediately discourages young women from entering higher education. They fear failure and the women before them are labelled as failures. “I remind them of the resilience of these women who are role models. Despite the challenges, women are aspiring to get into these positions.” Professor Ngqondi is not deterred and one day would like to assume the role of a VC and continue to be a role model ... source - Business Day Magazine - National Women's Day A reluctant start in academia transformed into a deeply fulfilling journey for Prof Bennett Alexander, who recently retired after an impactful career, spanning almost 40 years. The Faculty of Informatics and Design recently bid farewell to Alexander, who served as Assistant Dean since 2017 and first joined the then Peninsula Technikon in 1985. Academia was not his first career choice. Alexander graduated with an engineering degree from UCT. However, the harsh realities of apartheid-era South Africa soon shattered those dreams. “Like many of my contemporaries, I faced significant barriers as a non-White engineer.” ... more Three students shine in international competition (Dec 2023) A creative Architectural Technology and Interior Design student has been announced as one of the winners in an international design competition while two other students received honourable mentions.
