Water governance, institutions, and infrastructure integration for climate-resilient pathways for smallholder farming systems in the Western Cape, South Africa
Funder: Water Research Commission
Project Period: April 2022 – March 2025
Project Summary
In the face of growing challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions like South Africa, smallholder farmers are among the most vulnerable. Building on insights from the 2017-2019 Water Research Commission project, which explored drought coping and adaptation strategies in Limpopo and the Western Cape, this project focuses on the historical towns in Overberg and West Coast District Municipalities. The project aims to address the critical issues of water governance, infrastructure performance, and institutional integration, all of which are vital for creating climate-resilient pathways for smallholder farmers. By assessing the impacts of climate change and drought on water resources and working closely with local stakeholders, the project seeks to empower communities, enhance agricultural productivity, and contribute to sustainable development in these vulnerable regions.

Fresh and Marine Water Management for Food Security and Water Democracy in the Context of Climate Change and Regional Policy in South Africa and Sweden
Funder: National Research Foundation
Project Period: 2023-2024
Project Summary
This project builds on the outcomes of the 2023 South Africa Sweden University Forum (SASUF) Sustainability Forum, focusing on the critical challenges of water security and sustainable coastal management in the context of climate change. By bringing together researchers from Sweden and South Africa, the project aims to deepen understanding of how fresh and marine water management can support food security and water democracy. Key activities include organising research workshops in Cape Town (South Africa) and Uppsala (Sweden), developing collaborative research proposals, delivering public lectures, and exploring opportunities for postgraduate research. This initiative will generate comparative knowledge to inform regional climate adaptation policies and promote sustainable water management practices.
