Centre Activities

The CSBTR’s operational capacity supports the following inter-related research components:

  • Research promotion: engagement of postgraduate and academic staff in research projects; hosting research conferences/ workshops/ seminars;
  • Student practical experience with sports performance technology;
  • Sports industry and community engagement: sport performance services (e.g. athlete testing and rehabilitation); research projects; non-formal education; equipment and venue usage; and technology development or testing;
  • Internationalisation: Postgraduate student and research exchange programmes; hosting visiting academics.

We offer the sports and leisure industry the following opportunities:

  • contract research projects related to the core aims of the centre;
  • facility hiring for related projects, seminars and training related to these core activities;
  • athlete testing and rehabilitation;
  • research conferences/ workshops/ seminars.

Highlighted Activities and Projects

wis conferenceThe Centre's activities include research projects, such as the “Rooibos Exercise Study.” This continues to be a flagship project led by Prof Davies of the CSBTR in collaboration with the Applied Microbial & Health Biotechnology Institute (AMHBI) at CPUT. A large-scale project in the planning phase is the sport mega-event impact study that will focus on the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.

We host academic conferences and will co-host the World Association of Sport Management (WASM) global conference in March 2026.

We work with industry partners on projects, such as the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). 

We have several international research collaborations with other institutions worldwide. We also participate in the F’SATI agreement at CPUT, which supports scientific partnerships with selected universities in France.
