Retail Business Management
The Department of Retail Business Management endeavours to be the first choice provider of retail business management education in Africa. Our vision is to be the first choice provider of higher level graduates and relevant research output for the wholesale and retail industry in Africa that compares favourably with the best in the world. Our mission is to empower learners to be successful managers/ owners of a retail or wholesale business in the shortest possible time.
The qualifications that we offer provide students with the knowledge, insight and skills needed to follow a successful management career in the retail or wholesale fields. Retail and wholesale businesses strive to satisfy the needs of consumers by providing the necessary products and services.

Career Opportunities and Entry Requirements
Career Opportunities
The retail industry offers national and international career opportunities for the graduate. The variety of retail and wholesale businesses are virtually unlimited and includes departmental stores, hypermarkets, shopping centres, speciality stores, general dealers, chain stores, supermarkets, factory stores, boutiques and restaurants.
Graduates can assume junior, middle and senior management and ownership positions within the wholesale and retail sectors.
Entry requirements for first-year students
National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) with:
- English (4)
- Mathematics (2) or Mathematical Literacy (4)
National Certificate Vocational (NCV Level 4)
- English (50%)
- Mathematics (50%) or Mathematical Literacy (60%)
- At least 60% in any three business subjects, or three years relevant retail experience
- An NSC with at least three years relevant retail experience will also be considered.
The department utilises an Academic Point Score (APS) as selection criteria once your minimum admission requirements are satisfied. You must score a minimum of 26 on the APS.
