Accounting Sciences
Welcome to the new Department of Accounting Sciences
The department focuses on developing the disciplines of financial accounting, management accounting, internal auditing, risk management, financial control and governance, taxation as well as accounting information systems. It aims to be recognised at national and international levels for excellence in creating and disseminating knowledge in its focus areas and to positively contribute towards South Africa’s economic and social development by producing innovative graduates in these fields with competitive skills. In reaching these objectives, the department contributes to the accounting, internal auditing, taxation and financial information systems professions, as well as to research and postgraduate studies within these disciplines. The department also involves itself in various research, community engagement and continuing education projects. The department is proud to be the only academic department in the Western Cape to offer an array of focused competitive qualifications in internal auditing, and a postgraduate diploma in applied taxation accredited by the South African Institute of Taxation (SAIT).
The department’s teaching activities are mostly aimed at developing students for the various professional qualifications related to the disciplines mentioned.
Our programmes lead to membership in quite a number of professional institutes as mentioned below:
- for financial accounting, there is the Southern African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) as well as the Chartered Institute of Business Accountants (CIBA);
- for taxation, the South African Institute of Taxation (SAIT);
- for internal auditing, the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA); and
- for management accounting, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
Career opportunities
The department provides qualifications that empower students with the skills, competence, knowledge, and understanding to become professional accountants, internal auditors, management accountants and tax practitioners. This will enable them to perform services ranging from traditional assurance services (financial- and compliance audits) to value-adding business advisory and assurance services (operational- and strategic audits). Career opportunities include compliance officers, accounting officers, cost and management accountants, internal auditors, risk personnel, tax practitioners and forensics.
