Chemistry
Chemistry
The department offers the National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, BTech (Chemistry), MTech (Chemistry) and PhD (Chemistry). Diploma graduates are able to apply basic principles and techniques of chemical quantitative and qualitative analysis, quality control of raw materials and finished products, and research and development. Students benefit from the practical hands-on laboratory skills component with up-to-date equipment as well as direct exposure to the work situation.
Employment opportunities exist in research and development laboratories, industries such as detergent, petroleum, plastics, food, metals, pulp and paper and pharmaceuticals and educational institutions. Graduates are able to conduct routine tests on raw materials, products or environmental samples or prepare basic chemical compounds.
The department also offers Chemistry to the Food Sciences, Biotechnology, Environmental and Occupational Studies, Conservation and Marine Sciences, Mathematics and Chemical Engineering departments.
Mission
The Department of Chemistry strives through quality education, scholarship and research, to produce graduates who are life-long learners, equipped with relevant up-to-date technical skills and vocational training ensuring that they are employable and able to respond to societal and technological needs.
Vision
To be the centre of excellence in producing graduates capable of applying cutting edge technology in chemical sciences to meet the needs of the African continent.
Qualifications
The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in Chemistry:

Work-Integrated Learning
The placement of final year Diploma students in an Industry is referred to as a 'work-integrated-learning' placement. Previously, it was also referred to as 'in-service training' or 'cooperative learning'.
Analytical Chemistry students spend the first two years of the Diploma on establishing the fundamentals of Chemistry, followed by the third year in a Chemistry Industry, which covers a wide spectrum of Chemical Industries, for example, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food, paints, paper, wine, etc.
These industries are both local, i.e. in the Western Cape or outside the Western Cape.
WIL Mini-Symposium
Showcasing the innovative projects and research undertaken by our WIL students. A fusion of academic knowledge and practical application. Step into a world where science meets enterprise. Through their mini-projects, our WIL students showcase the potential to transform scientific insight into innovative solutions.
Outreach
The department, as part of its mission statement, strives to create social awareness among its students. To this end, a number of initiatives were undertaken.
One project involved the 'adoption' of secondary schools in the neigbouring environment. Grade 8-12 students are given the opportunity to visit the CPUT Chemistry laboratories where they can engage with content-specific practicals.
The department also visits schools where practicals and demonstrations are done on-site.
Schools Outreach Programmes
Facilities
The department has a wide range of instruments available which are used for teaching and research purposes. The available instrumentation can be divided into the following categories:
- Atomic Spectroscopy: AAS, GFAAS, ICP, XRD
- Molecular Spectroscopy: FTIR-ATR, UVs
- Chromatography: LC-TOF, GC-MS,
- Electrochemistry
- Thermal: DSC
- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ((NMR) spectrometer
