W&R SETA awards hundreds of bursaries to CPUT students

The Wholesale & Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&R SETA) has this year awarded bursaries to 316 CPUT students to the value of approximately R30 million.

  The students in the Retail Business Management Department applied for the bursaries after the SETA invited applicants in an advertisement published in national media.

“SETA adjudicates the applications and award based on merit,” says Advancement Director Calvin Maseko.

“The SETA then sends a list of the approved students to CPUT before coming to us for verifications.”

The SETA’s bursaries were awarded to CPUT students as follows:

303 undergraduate students got a maximum of R71 000 each;

Seven continuing students got a maximum of R71 000 each. Previously the SETA funded 96 students and out of the 96 the seven are still continuing with their qualifications;

Four PhD students, got a maximum of R250 000 each and;

12 Masters students got a maximum of R150 000 each.

“The PhD students are CPUT lecturers and this is highly appreciated because it motivates staff members to get higher qualifications,” says Maseko.

The initiative contributes to the university’s targets for the New Generation of Academics Programme.

CPUT has already made books and meals allocation to the students and the invoices were sent to the SETA.

“CPUT highly appreciates this partnership,” he says gratefully.

W&R Seta awards millions in bursaries

The Wholesale & Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA) has awarded bursaries to the tune of R42 million to CPUT students who excel academically.

This year the SETA awarded 160 new bursaries to successful applicants in addition to more than 300 students who they have been funding since last year. This amounted to a life-changing R42 million.

The students, who are in the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, applied for funding earlier this year directly to the Seta via their website.

During a bursary contract signing session held recently on the District Six campus, the Seta gave students backpacks and stationery in preparation for the upcoming exams.

CPUT and the W&R SETA have a strong partnership since the latter has been awarding bursaries to our students over the past four years.

“We highly appreciate partnering with the SETA. They have been funding both undergraduate and postgraduate bursaries as well as the Wholesale & Retail Leadership Research Chair. The postgraduate bursaries are assisting developing future academics,” said Prof Paul Green, Dean of Business and Management Sciences.

“Some of these students are graduating in December and this makes us proud as an institution to see students realise their potential.”

Wholesale & Retail Chair gets extension

The Wholesale & Retail Leadership Chair (WRLC) will continue to make an impact in the sector following a two-year extension by the Wholesale & Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA).

The chair is housed in the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences and the new contract, which will run until 2020, is worth R9.7 million.

“The award has been made to enable the WRLC to continue to contribute to the professionalisation of the retail and wholesale sector through research, teaching and learning, staff and student capacitation, networking and collaboration with local and international universities and retail research centres, and distribution of new retail knowledge through journal articles, conferences and media,” says chairholder Prof Roger Mason.

“Furthermore the WRLC will also assist with the capacitation of a new rural university’s retail operations.”

The WRLC has been funded by the W&RSETA since 2013 when the first contract was awarded. The five years of operation have resulted in 23 research projects being completed, 20 papers published in academic journals, 18 papers presented at academic conferences and 13 papers presented at conferences, while more than 40 articles were published in the retail trade and business media.

A Retail Academy has also been established at CPUT to implement professional management training for the retail sector. A three-year Quality Council for Trades and Occupations qualification and four short courses have been developed and in excess of 250 retail managers have completed, or are in the process of completing these courses.

“The extension of the contract and the award of such a large grant is evidence of the success of the WRLC and the satisfaction that the W&RSETA has with the relationship built up with CPUT over the years,” adds Mason.

“We would, therefore, like to thank the W&RSETA for the trust and faith that they have placed, and continue to place, in CPUT and the WRLC.”
