The Cape Town Hotel School recently partnered with a local non-profit organisation, Pocket Money Market to host an event for 120 children to trade their goods and perform artistic renditions.
Last Saturday the Cape Town Hotel School’s Community Engagement and Service-Learning strategic pillar joined hands with Pocket Money Market, which hosts an annual Youth Day event for children, to host a market outside the Two Oceans Aquarium on the V&A Waterfront.
The market was abuzz with activity as 26 stalls were erected for trade by the 40 young entrepreneurs and the event’s sponsors, as well as a stage for live entertainment.
The Hotel School’s team assisted with judging the stalls (scoring them out of 10 for each category), interacting with the traders and assisting the children with de-rigging when trading closed.
During the award ceremony for outstanding stalls, the Hotel School’s Short Course Co-ordinator Nandipha Nyumba presented the Hospitality Category winner, Erin's Pet Emporium, with a VIP access pass to the Hotel School’s behind-the-scenes tour.
“Since all the kids had done well and we were extremely proud of the initiative, we decided to award each category winner with the same award,” said Hotel School Revenue Controller Baba Belle.
“We were afforded a great opportunity to interact with young entrepreneurs. Some of them were selling items and donating the sales’ proceeds to a charity organisation.
“Instilling those values in a young mind is so crucial and as the leader of the pillar, that's why I chose this organisation. And, despite being ill, I attended the event.”
Belle added that the parents of Erin Boshoff, owner of winning Erin's Pet Emporium, were excited and mentioned that their daughter insisted on going to a school that offers Consumer Studies for grade 8 next year so she could be a potential CPUT student in the future.
