Young entrepreneurs sell their wares at CPUT Market Day

The third annual CPUT Market Day took place on Monday 8 September 2008 on the Cape Town Campus.

The event, which was held in the Student Centre, was hosted by Student Affairs. The aim of the Market Day was not only to give students a chance to make some extra money but also to show their entrepreneurial skills.

The Market Day was attended by many students looking for a treat. Everything from cakes to jewellery was sold. There was even a thumb war stall, which challenged students to a thumb war, as well as a health promotion stall, which enlightened passers on the benefits of living a healthy, balanced life.

The popular 5fm DJ, Euphonik, also attended to keep both students as well as stall holders alike entertained.

All round the event was successful, even the dreadful rain could not keep students away. Campus was abuzz with students from different faculties pitching up to enjoy the goods and activities on offer.

New chill spot elevates student experience

A new chill spot on the Bellville campus will provide students with a space to take a relaxing break to enjoy their lunch, watch a big sport match or simply chill.

Located behind the Student Centre, the chill spot is expected to be ready for use in November and will have high-speed internet, picnic benches, specialised 55-inch media screens and electric power points for devices.

The plan is to roll-out the concept to all campuses.

“The concept is to promote more living and learning spaces on our campuses with an enhanced experience of university life,” said Phillip Chibvuri from the Residence Commercial Services Unit.

The spot also provides shelter for shuttle users and is directly opposite a shuttle point.

“Students can have some lunch, listen to some campus radio, watch big sport games, check their shuttle times on the screens and just chill in general”, he added.

The screens will air a variety of content, mainly consisting of edutainment.

“This very concept will assist in providing our students with places they can relax and discuss all their experiences in a safe and convenient environment.  After all, students need to ‘chill’. This is a step in the direction of creating hubs for our students for positive development and experience at our beloved CPUT”, said Johnny Basson, Business Manager: Residence Commercial Services Unit.

Chibvuri added: “The chill spot concept strives to ensure a product that is memorable and enhancing to the student experience at our Institution.  It is part of the residences enhancement and experience programme, which seeks to promote interaction, sense of belonging, recreation and  convenience in the development of a fully baked  graduate while at the same time promoting  sustainability  and viability for the institution.”

Paper art

Staff and students returning to the Cape Town campus today will be welcomed by an unusual art installation.

A corner of the Student Centre now features an interesting origami wall thanks to first-year Surface Design students.

Informatics and Design students work has traditionally been displayed within their department but an initiative is underway to ensure many more common spaces around campus get an image makeover.

Surface Design lecturer Julia Brewis says her first-year students worked for hours installing the paper piece which features horns and is based on the concept of water.

“The folding piece starts from the ceiling and cascades down the wall onto the floor space covering the entire pillar. Sharp spiked cone elements also protrude from the pillar,” says Brewis.

She says she hopes many more faculties and not only FID students will take up the challenge of beautifying their common areas.

“We want to personalize the space and encourage creativity and dialogue because our campus lacks creative involvement,” she says.

“We are all very excited and hope that other disciplines will be inspired to do something.”

Her colleague Elna Lubbe says the installation will be moved to the Council Chambers soon to enable staff at the Bellville campus to view the work.

A second round of installations including wool hangings by second year Surface Design students will be displayed shortly.
