Innovative new business course offered at CPUT

The first participants of a world-renowned new basic business course will be completing their ten-day training today.

The TERP-10 Enterprise Resource Planning (TERP) - Integration of Business Processes course was a partnership between CPUT’s Faculty of Business and global software application giant SAP (Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing).

The group of 18 students were trained in the following fields; Financial and Management Accounting, Human Capital Management, Procurement, Inventory Management, Material Planning and Manufacturing.

Additionally, they were also taught processes in Plant Maintenance, Sales and Order Management, Customer Service, Lifecycle Data Management, and Project and Strategic Enterprise Management.

The course is internationally accredited and has already been successfully introduced in Germany.

It aims to benefit anyone working for companies with global trading links or individuals interested in developing fresh business processes.

So far eight CPUT staff members have completed the course and it is anticipated that this will give them a competitive edge in the market place.

Senior Accounting Studies lecturer Henrie Benedict says the course gave him a glimpse into the inner workings of various businesses.

“It explains the total functions both in theory and practice. It is a value-adding tool for any potential and existing employee. Talk about standing out of the crowd!”

Full-time student Lance Sikonela says he enrolled in the course to give him an added edge when he enters the work place one day.

“I think the course is going to help me a lot, especially going into industry. It gives you a basic understanding of things every company needs to operate. I’d recommend it to anyone in any field, as it’s a good investment”, he says.

Whether it’s calculating homeowners’ monthly council rates or manufacturing chocolate, diverse industries are relying on SAP software systems.

To make sure our students are work-ready, CPUT together with the international organisation SAP University Alliance is running the TERP10 course, which trains participants how to use these specialised systems.

CPUT is the only institution in Africa offering this course and recently held an Open Day at the Bellville and Cape Town campuses where industry professionals urged students to complete the course.

Ashraf Patel, a representative from SAP University Alliance, says the software is being used by local and international companies to operate business processes from payroll to production systems.

“SAP is the leading enterprise application company in the world. If you invest in this training then you will have a footprint in industry,” he says.

Currently, 72% of the world’s beer and 70% of the world’s chocolate production processes are managed by SAP systems. Municipalities also rely on it to put together homeowners’ monthly rates bill while courier companies use it to move packages around the globe.

Pick ‘n Pay’s Francious van der Merwe gave students an inside look into the use of the software saying their company, along with other well-known South African Brands, have implemented this software in many of their departments.

He says companies are now looking for graduates who have completed the TERP10 course.

A coordinator of the course, Ferdoo Maree says this specialised training is open to all CPUT students and staff as well as their counterparts from other South African universities and colleges.

Keeping up with industry

A group of lecturers in the Business Faculty have successfully completed the universally recognised professional SAP certification program, TERP10.

This 10-day training course focuses on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and teaches participants the basic business processes used in a variety of fields such as accounting, procurement and manufacturing.

The lecturers who have successfully completed the course are now recognised as certified SAP trainers, allowing them to roll-out this much sought-after training programme to CPUT students.

This international qualification will add value to anyone’s CV and will give our students a competitive edge in the marketplace.

A lecturer at the Wellington Campus, Mvemve Mdingi, is excited about exposing students to the course and believes it will prepare them for the demands of the business world.

With the course internationally recognised, Mdingi says students will be marketable in local and global industries.

Auditing and Financial Accounting lecturer, Lindiwe Mabesele, says: "Through the course I have gained valuable insight into complex and integrated systems.  Some concepts can be incorporated into my course to help students better understand effective systems and controls.”

TERP10 coordinator and lecturer, Jerry Ansen, says CPUT is the only university in the world with such a large number of certified SAP trainers.

The SAP University Alliances program is a global programme that provides university faculty members with the tools and resources necessary to teach students how technology can enable integrated business processes and strategic thinking and gives students the skills to add immediate value to the marketplace.

Ferdo Maree, a lecturer at CPUT said, “We are very excited to be part of this initiative. We joined the Alliance to offer hands-on experience on SAP to help increase graduate recruitment rates when the student leave varsity for the job world or if they wish to be entrepreneurs.”
