Application numbers defy COVID-19 pandemic limitations

CPUT is still receiving a high volume of applications for admission despite the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on operational processes.

With the theme, Building South Africa’s future by creating yours, applications for admission to study at CPUT in 2021 opened on 8 June and the university has already received more than 59 202 academic programme choices from 25 540 applicants.

Admissions and Registrations Centre Manager, Sonja Swanich, said the application rate is higher than last year. “It is an increase of 9 314 application choices from 2 619 applicants in comparison with 15 July 2019 figures.”

Swanich also urged prospective CPUT students to apply as soon as possible as spaces in programmes are limited. Whether you aspire to work in clothing and textile technology, town and regional planning, nursing, engineering or information technology, the institution has you covered with numerous career-focused courses to choose from. The university has six faculties offering more than 80 undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of Applied Sciences, Business and Management Sciences, Education, Engineering and the Built Environment, Informatics and Design, as well as Health and Wellness Sciences.

The admission requirements for current Grade 12 learners will be based on their final Grade 11 marks only, together with any additional programme specific requirements (where applicable). Final acceptance to the programme will still be based on the final Grade 12 results.

Swanich also advised the applicants to only submit their applications if they are 100 percent certain that they meet the entrance requirements (validate against 2021 prospectus), and that they have obtained all the necessary supporting documentation as outlined on the CPUT website.

“Always submit your first choice as your first career choice, followed by your second and third career choices. Always submit your online application together with required documentation,” Swanich said.

She urged the prospective students to first read all the relevant application-related information as outlined in each step. “Once you are certain of which programmes you are interested in applying for...first check for any programme specific requirements as outlined [on the website].”

Applicants can go to https://www.cput.ac.za/study/apply/step-2-gather-your-documents-or-upload-further-outstanding-documents.

Get the documents ready and submit together with the application. Read the online step-by-step application guides obtainable from the CPUT website.

Submit your application as soon as possible and avoid last-minute submissions.

Walk-in applications now open

Prospective students who have not been able to secure space to study in 2020 can now apply for academic programmes with available spaces via the walk-in application process.

Spokesperson Lauren Kansley said the institution will process individuals who applied on time and were waitlisted. Kansley said: “Walk-ins only happen in courses with space and once the waitlisted individuals have been processed. The registration process has been significantly reduced after CPUT rolled out a sophisticated digital platform which automatically sifts through applications and prioritises qualifying applicants.”

This applies to national applicants including refugee/asylum seeker and or permanent residency applicants with a South African Qualifications Authority certificate, National Senior Certificate, Senior Certificate, National Vocal Certificate and National Qualification.

This also includes applicants who exhausted only one or two options out of the maximum of three choices for applications submitted during the normal application timelinesThe university also considers applicants who did not apply during the normal application timelines with a maximum of three choices.

First-time entering applicants who have applied for first-year undergraduate studies at CPUT but were unsuccessful may also apply to CACH. Click here for further details.

Applicants are urged to consult the list of programmes with available spaces and for submission during above timeframe. The prospective students must ensure that they meet the minimum admission and subject requirements for their programmes of choice. Applicants must also certify all their supporting documentation and that certification must be less than three months old.

CPUT opens doors to prospective students

CPUT will open its door to thousands of prospective students this Saturday when the annual Open Day takes place on the Bellville Campus.

CPUT Open Day is one of the Mother City’s most prominent career events and attracts about 20 000 visitors. It is also the institution’s biggest marketing event and is organised by the Marketing and Communication Department, in collaboration with all academic departments.

“Open Day targets Grade 11 and 12 learners across the Western Cape and aims to promote CPUT as an institution of choice for career-focused education,” says Student Recruitment Officer, Marilyn Cloete. “All schools in our catchment areas have been invited and we expect a huge turnout at the event.”

CPUT offers more than 70 diploma and degree programmes in the fields of Applied Sciences, Business and Management Sciences, Engineering and the Built Environment, Education, Health and Wellness Sciences and Informatics and Design.
“We will also open up some of the departments’ facilities on campus for guided tours which will give visitors the opportunity to view them,” adds Cloete.

The event will provide learners and their parents, as well as other prospective students, with an opportunity to interact with our staff and students. Presentations on various topics will be held throughout the day.

The Open Day will take place from 09H00 to 16H00. It will include exhibitions at the Major Sports Hall, Old Education Hall, Student Centre and the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.

There will also be visits to various science departments and the library and support services as well as presentations in the Auditorium.
