Giving thanks

A number of businesses were recognized at the workplace learning employer’s breakfast for their pivotal role in providing students with work-integrated learning opportunities.

Hosted by the Faculty of Business at Kelvin Grove in Newlands, the event was attended by various companies that contributed greatly to the triumph of the university’s Work Integrated Learning programme.

Various speakers at the event highlighted the value and impact the programme has on its various role-players.

Dean of the Faculty of Business, Prof Mzikayise Binza thanked the businesses for their constant support to CPUT, its students and their families, especially under today’s current economic climate.

He says the businesses are key stakeholders in the development of CPUT students.

“Without companies like yours the programme would not be a success,” says Prof Binza.

The morning’s events included a certificate ceremony to note the role that various companies played in the department’s Work Integrated Learning programmes. Special awards were given to companies that have had ten or more years involvement in the programmes.

Extended Public Works Programme and City staff congratulated

The Graduate Centre for Management recently handed over certificates to hundreds of staff from the City of Cape Town and Extended Public Works.

Addressing the ceremony at the Bellville campus yesterday the City’s Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille says the best way to build a well-run city is maximizing the potential of city staff through effective training and development.

“We understand that if we invest in the people who work for the City, we are investing in service delivery, and in the provision of more opportunities for more of our people,” De Lille told the audience.

CPUT was awarded the tender to provide accredited Adult Education and Training to City staff with the objective of developing their communication, budget management, diversity management and decision-making skills.

“Today, 243 staff members have completed this training,” De Lille explained.

“This year it was decided that 216 EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) workers would also be afforded the opportunity to receive this training.”

Dean of the Faculty of Business, Prof Mzikayise Binza says CPUT has provided the city staff with knowledge that will contribute to their future success and advancement in the workplace.

“You have proven your ability to learn and dedicate yourselves and your time, to the achievement of a goal in your life,” he says.

Beryl Liebetrau, Acting Head of the Graduate Centre for Management, says it was a privilege to work with the city staff.

Competency Centre for Enterprise Resource Planning

CPUT is now officially home to the continent’s first Competency Centre for Enterprise Resource Planning.

Launched this month, the Cape Town-based centre will run Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) training courses, which focus on integrated basic business processes used in a variety of fields such as accounting, procurement and manufacturing.

The centre features 25 computers which run on the SAP technology and is funded by the German Government and international company SAP. The project is implemented by German agency GIZ.

The erp4school project started in 2010 and according to Prof Mzikayise Binza, the Dean of the Business Faculty, CPUT has surpassed its training targets.

So far, CPUT has trained 344 lecturers as well 342 students across 26 universities and colleges in Africa.

One of the project coordinators at CPUT, Jerry Ansen, says more than 1 000 students on the continent currently have access to the program.

Ansen says the program has been integrated into the curricula of five courses in the faculty and that plans to include it into other courses are underway.

Representing the German government, Consul Anne Rehner says CPUT was the right institution to partner with and that the project will contribute to economic growth on the African continent.
