Open Day 2009 a hit with Western Cape learners

Open Day 2009 proved to be a huge success, attracting close to 8 000 learners from across the Western Cape

This annual event is the largest student recruitment drive undertaken by the institution.

It provides Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners with the opportunity to obtain first-hand information regarding the more than 70 programmes on offer at CPUT.

This year’s event, which was held in the Major Sports Hall at the Bellville Campus, kicked off on 14 May and ran over three days.

School Liaison Officer and organiser of the Open Day, Grant Barends said: “We had an amazing response to this year’s event.”

Barends said schools turned out in large numbers, with some bringing more than 200 learners to visit the Open Day.

“We also had a large number of individuals visiting the Open Day,” he said.

This year, departments pulled out all the stops in designing and putting together their exhibition stands.

The Faculty of Engineering exhibition stands allowed learners the opportunity to explore engineering equipment and get a behind the scenes view of the latest technological innovations

Engineering lecturer, Vuyani Moni, who manned the Mechanical Engineering stand said: “The learners were impressed with what they saw.”

Departments within the Faculty of Health and Wellness Sciences also showcased what students could expect if they follow one of the programmes the department has to offer.

Students at the Somatology stand put their skills into practice by providing free treatments, while students at the Dental Sciences stand performed demonstrations on how to manufacture dentures.

The Faculty of Education and Social Sciences promoted teaching while the Faculty of Applied Sciences gave learners the opportunity to view live experiments.

Departments within the Faculty of Business promoted the exciting world of Marketing, Events Managements, Tourism and several other programmes.

Eye-catching displays at the Faculty of Informatics and Design area highlighted the creativity of the staff and students behind the scenes.

Public Relations lecturer, Ayesha Toyer, who coordinated the faculties’ stands, said they enlisted first year Public Relations students to come up with a concept for the various departments.

Information Technology covered the wall of its stand with neon green ciphers, reminiscent of the film “The Matrix"".

The Interior Design stand was transformed into an elegant lounge area, while the Public Relations stand took on a circus theme, providing learners with goodie bags and popcorn.

Visitors to the event were also entertained by Radio Good Hope FM, who broadcasted their shows from CPUT.

School Liaison Officer, Marilyn Cloete, said: “The departments really went out of their way to make their stalls attractive.”

Cloete said CPUT students also “done the institution proud” by promoting the courses.

Stands at the Open day were judged by a panel of independent judges. The Judges looked at creativity, innovation and if they stand represented what the course was about.

The following departments clinched top prizes for their stands.

  • First Prize – Interior Design (Faculty of Informatics and Design)
  • Second Prize – Public Relations (Faculty of Informatics and Design)
  • Third Prize – Emergency Medical Sciences (Faculty of Health and Wellness)

Service Learning makes CPUT students proud SA citizens

LIKE most Universities CPUT is focused on delivering the best in teaching and research but we are also leading the way in another important aspect - Service Learning.

Former Peninsula Technikon Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Figaji discussed this vital point during the Service Learning (SL) Open Day held at CPUT’s Bellville Campus last week.

Prof Figaji said SL was important to staff and students alike because it made courses more relevant and gave students the opportunity to impart their knowledge on their communities.

He said staff also had something to gain in the SL process since it is ‘gratifying’ to see their students grow in a company.

“The personal satisfaction is what makes you grow and happy. It is the same thing that makes people get into teaching even when they are not paid well,” he pointed out.

“Send your students to remote areas, the real societies, so they can see what’s happening there and have a holistic view of society. Use any opportunity to instill value. Poverty does not make you less of a person.”

Professor Figaji said SL also satisfies CPUT’s mission to make coursework more relevant and urged the private sector to get more involved.

The Food and Technology Department was awarded the overall winner in the competition for the best stall while Mechanical Engineering and Public Management were runner-ups for Most Innovative and Best Partnership respectively.

DJ Suga and the Good Hope FM team add spice to CPUT Open Day

Popular Good Hope FM DJs Suga, Priya Reddy and Guy McDonald will be broadcasting their radio shows live from the CPUT Open Day exhibition at Bellville campus on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 May.

The broadcast will give listeners across the Western Cape a taste of the atmosphere at the University’s largest annual learner recruitment drive.

“The Cape Town Shakedown,” hosted by Suga from 9:00 to 12:00 and “Lunch Actually” hosted by Priya Reddy and Guy McDonald from 12:00 to 3:00 will both feature interviews with CPUT staff and students.

Suga, who was the first female DJ to have a primetime, weekday slot on commercial music format radio in Cape Town, is no stranger to CPUT. Her morning broadcast at Open Day 2008, which gave deans, lecturers and students turns behind the mike, was one of highlights of last year’s event.

This year, the Lunch Actually team, who took over Good Hope FM’s lunchtime slot in September 2008, will help extend the reach of the Open Day broadcast to afternoon listeners.

The broadcast on 14 May will kick off with an interview with CPUT Director of Marketing and Communication Norman Jacobs. Senior academic staff from the faculties of Business, Informatics and Design and Applied Sciences will then have their turn to tell radio listeners about programmes available at the institution.

The shows on 15 May will feature representatives of the Engineering, Health and Wellness and Education faculties. A student of Public Relations will have the final say at the last interview of the day on Friday.

Good Hope FM offers its audience a mixture of entertainment, information and community involvement. The station’s signal covers Metropolitan Cape Town and stretches as far as Langebaan, Malmesbury, Wellington, Paarl, Franchhoek, Stellenbosch and Gordon's Bay.

To find out more about the CPUT Open day broadcast, listen out for a promotional announcement currently being flighted on Good Hope FM. The station will also provide details of the broadcast on its website.

CPUT hosts Open Day 2008

The CPUT annual Open Day opened its doors on 15 May 2008. Crowds of learners visited the Multipurpose Hall of the Cape Town Campus over the event’s three-day duration.

According to Ms Fazloen Zouity of the Marketing and Communication Department, “Open Day is the biggest institutional marketing drive as all faculties are on board to promote potential career opportunities to Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners in South Africa .”

A variety of courses offered by the University were exhibited by various academic facilities and student support services. Learners and their parents were able to obtain first-hand information regarding the approximately 70 undergraduate courses on offer at the largest University in the Western Cape.

Exhibitors went to creative lengths to give their stalls a unique edge. The Public Relations exhibitors handed out goodie bags that were produced by students out of old newspapers. The Tourism Management exhibitors used a distinctive form of Guerilla Marketing by dressing up one of their representatives in a Gorilla costume. Events Management had a Sophiatown theme with old records hanging suspended from the sides of their stand. The Marketing exhibit was decorated in a snowy winter theme to go with the stand’s slogan, “Marketing is cool.” Photography Technology displayed a striking collection of current student projects that covered almost all of the stall’s wall space.

Many of the stalls had an interactive element. Learners could browse multimedia presentations to gain more information about courses. Applied Sciences and Engineering exhibitions gave learners the chance to experience live scientific experiments and technology demonstrations. Good Hope FM did a live radio broadcast from the Multipurpose Hall which gave learners an opportunity to see exactly how the broadcasting procedure operates. The braver learners were seen shaking hands and introducing themselves to DJ Suga.

Overall, the Open Day kickoff proved be full of fun, learnership and good spirits for the learners, exhibitors and CPUT staff. Open Day continued on Friday 16 May and Saturday 17 May.

Robot comes alive at CPUT

CPUT’s innovation drive gained momentum when an integrated project by students in the Information Technology Department led to the creation of a robot.

The robot was built by staff and third-year students from all the department’s four streams.

“We decided to do a star wars theme for Open Day and part of the theme was to build a Star Wars Robot. We decided to build a BB8 droid,” says Project Owner Prima Inderlal.

The robot uses an aduino module, Bluetooth module, motor shield controller and a mobile app. It shows how Information technology integrates with robotics.

“We controlled the aduino using C programming, controlled the movement of the robot using an android app which linked to the aduino via Bluetooth,” adds Inderlal.

“We have also registered on www.bb8builders.club and are possibly one of the first to complete the bot in Africa, let alone South Africa according to their member map.”

The department recently demonstrated the robot at a ceremony on the Cape Town Campus where its partners in industry showered the students with gifts in recognition of their work over public holidays, weekends and nights.

CSG International sponsored a Raspberry Pi 3 bundle to Jason McKay and Workpool sponsored R1 000 cash gift each to Brandon May and Lwamkelo Cakata.

Openbox Software sponsored 12 R400 Takealot.com vouchers to the other students who participated, while DVT sponsored some items to start the build of the robot.

The students also created a video showcasing the project which the department intends to show publically after it is edited.

Open Day success

The Bellville Campus was buzzing with activity as thousands of learners and parents attended Saturday’s Open Day and gained career information from CPUT staff and students at exhibition stalls and presentations on various topics throughout the day.

The learners said attending the event was time well spent as they learnt a lot about qualifications offered at CPUT, while others were glad that they armed with enough information that enabled them to make their career choices on the spot.

Reyonce Martin, a Grade 12 learner at Klein Nederburg Secondary School in Paarl, said she was glad she attended the Open Day and learnt a lot about Paralegal Studies, the course she would like to study next year. “I want to study the course as I want to get innocent people out of the overflowing jails,” said Reyonce.

Another Grade 12 learner from the same school, Keshia Abrahams, said she intends to enrol for Tourism Management as she wants to travel around the world. Said Keshia: “I know that CPUT will give me a good training and in my second year I will go for my in-service training.”

Vuyisa Ntosini, a Grade 11 learner at Esangweni Secondary School in Khayelitsha, said a tour of the Mechanical Engineering Department was an eye-opener as he came across a 3D Printer. Vuyisa added that the machine “was truly amazing as it makes manufacturing products way too easy”.

Entrepreneurship lecturer Frank Makoza said the day was a success because there was good reception of information by the learners and parents who visited the department’s stall. Makoza added that frequently asked questions included the entry requirements for the course as well as what is entrepreneurship as a field of study.

Visitors were given string bags which contained the day’s programme with a Bellville campus map for them to find their way around campus with ease, the 2020 Prospectus and the Financial Aid First Year Students 2020 brochure.

As part of improving brand experience for prospective students, the university arranged for Good Hope FM to broadcast live from the event while Gold Otter Media activated an Instagram printer, green screen photo booth and amazing selfie cookies throughout the day.

End of semester message

It is hard to believe that the institution is already preparing to wind down its first semester and that half the year has passed.

A well-deserved recess is on the cards for the majority of staff and students and I hope you will use the break to reflect on the successes and less successful elements of the past six months.

There is much to celebrate such as the send-off of our second ZACube-2 nano-satellite; the Autumn graduation series and the hugely successful Open Day which proves that CPUT is still an attractive higher education choice for learners.

For some of you this break will be an exciting one as you prepare to share your knowledge with peers at conferences. You represent CPUT when you do this and I am confident that you will be the brand ambassadors that the institution needs you to be.Some of our administration and essential services staff will remain on duty during this time to ensure business continuity. Your contribution is equally important as we deep clean our buildings, continue to process applications for the class of 2019 and handle queries from the public. The second semester will be equally busy, with applications closing and with several initiatives, such as the launch of the CPUT Institutional Social Cohesion statement and some great Mandela Day activations, I urge you to please give them your support.

In the IDFM sector, we have finalised the appointment of a Director of Security and are in the final stages of appointing a Director of Estates (Property Services). We have also completed the refurbishment of the Auditorium and the renovation of the Information Centre and Main Bellville gate is also progressing rapidly. These are exciting times and I hope you will return energised and as excited as I am to continue strengthening this institution and building it from the inside out.Regards

Acting Vice-Chancellor
Dr Chris Nhlapo
