CPUT donates to the homeless

The Faculty of Business donated ten boxes of food and clothing to The Haven Night Shelter for homeless adults.

The shelter is located in close proximity to the university’s Cape Town campus and houses close to 100 homeless adults.

Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business Ivan van der Heever says the donations were received from the faculty’s staff members as part of the Mandela Day Project.

“We decided to start with the community that’s closest to the campus,” he says.

Sheila Jacobs, manager at the shelter, welcomed CPUT’s donation.

She says part of their mission is to find permanent homes for homeless individuals, whether with their relatives or any other parties.

The shelter has a social worker who assesses new clients’ needs as well as a skills trainer who provides training in various fields.

Jacobs says they also have several fieldworkers who patrol suburban areas and rescue homeless individuals who are taken in by the haven. Individuals can stay at the shelter for up to nine months.

To carry out its mandate, the shelter relies on donations from the community and funding from the Department of Social Development.

The faculty is currently looking at further collaborations with the shelter.

A great night for achievers

The Faculty of Business hosted its annual Achievers’ Dinner at the Hotel School in Granger Bay on Friday evening, 2 March 2012.

The purpose of the event was to celebrate staff achievements in various categories, such as teaching, research and community engagement.

With the Chairman of Council, Mbulelo Bikwani, the Faculty Dean, Prof Mzikayise Binza and other Executive representatives present, the evening turned out to be one filled with much celebration.

Associate Director, Ivan Van Der Heever, acted as the master of ceremonies introducing Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation Technology and Partnerships, Dr Chris Nhlapo, as well as the keynote speaker, the Council Chair.

In his address, Bikwani encouraged the nominees with anecdotes saying: “Each of us are endowed with seeds of greatness and it’s what you do with them that matters most. Always try to have a positive attitude.”

All the nominees were presented with certificates to award their work in the faculty, while all 14 category winners each received a specially engraved trophy.

One of the front runners in the achievement awards was Prof Simeon Davies, Head of the Sports Management Department. He received a total of three awards for Researcher of the Year, Departmental Award for Research and Head of Department of the Year.

The Hotel School itself also scooped awards in two categories relating to community engagement.

Another great talking point was one of the Faculty’s own postgraduate students, Ifriky Tadadjeu Sokeng, who delivered sterling classical performances as the evening’s entertainment.

“I thoroughly enjoyed his singing; it added to the wonderful ambience of the evening”, said enthused faculty member Andre Du Toit, who was also a nominee in several categories.

German university strengthens collaboration with CPUT

The Faculty of Business and Management Sciences recently hosted a delegation from Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Germany and agreed to exchange students and staff.

The delegation comprised of Prof Daniel Michelis, Bachelor's Degree Programme Manager of International Business Studies, and Anand Jayakrishnan, MBA International Trade Co-ordinator at Anhalt’s Economics Faculty.

The delegates had meetings with the HoD: Marketing, Mandy Jones, and HoD: Management and Project Management, Angela Buys to discuss future collaboration between Anhalt University and the departments.

They also met with the students and staff who will be visiting Anhalt University of Applied Sciences on exchange programs in September.

Students got the opportunity to ask questions regarding what to expect while in Germany, how to prepare for the snow and about German life in general.

The students will be in Germany for three months and the staff member for two weeks.

The faculty’s Associate Dean Ivan van der Heever, who oversees the faculty’s International Exchange Programme says CPUT and Anhalt University have a longstanding relationship.

“Anhalt University was one of the first universities with which the faculty formed partnerships many years ago,” he says.

During their two-day visit, the delegates were hosted by the faculty’s International Exchanges Co-ordinator, Nizaam Peck, whogave his guests a taste of cape town via a campus tour and a visit to the popular Eastern Bazaar for lunch.

In this semester the faculty has received 28 students who come from universities in Austria, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
