Head of HIV/AIDS Unit joins Golden Key

As CPUT celebrates the coming launch of Golden Key, the institution recognises one of its own who has recently achieved membership status.

Dr Ashraf Mohammed, Head of Department for the HIV/AIDS Unit, completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Cape Town where he developed his profile in the medical field.

His doctoral thesis focused on the aspects of a tuberculosis (TB) screening test developed, which was subsequently included in the national guideline to HIV-positive patients.

Prior to graduating with his qualification, Dr Mohammed published several papers for peer review and submitted data to global medical bodies such as the Centre for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation to be included in their meta-analysis studies.

As a result of these fine academic achievements, he was invited to become a member of the Society earlier this year.

New Golden Key members recognised

CPUT Golden Key Chapter recently hosted a New Member Recognition Ceremony at Bellville Campus.

Golden Key is the world’s largest collegiate honour society. Membership into the Society is by invitation only and applies to the top 15% of college and university sophomores, juniors, and seniors, as well as top-performing graduate students in all fields of study, based solely on their academic achievements.

Golden Key has chapters at over 400 colleges and universities in Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, The Bahamas, and the United States.

The Society offers members valuable opportunities for individual growth through the three pillars: academics, leadership and service. Golden Key offers numerous scholarships and awards, available only to members, as well as career development, networking and literacy service opportunities and unique discounts from partner companies.

In her opening speech, Student Development Officer, Melani-Ann Hara, congratulated the new Golden Key members. Hara said: “I would like to personally congratulate you on the hard work and effort you put in to be where you are today.”

Director of Golden Key Southern Africa, Elmie Castleman, said: “It is indeed a noteworthy achievement for a student to be invited to join the Golden Key community. Less than 10% of our population have the opportunity to attend university. You are in a privileged position to be among the top 15% of those 10% whose extraordinary achievement we are acknowledging and celebrating today.”

Castleman said active members will benefit from excellent exposure and bear the fruit of their involvement. She added that lifetime membership gives them access to influential networks; opportunities to develop leadership skills; community service opportunities; and career development. “As a member of Golden Key, you have earned this space. It is a platform where you can connect with like-minded students and achievers, not only in South Africa, but across the world.”

Vice-Chancellor, Prof Chris Nhlapo and Acting Dean of Students, Nonkosi Tyolwana, were also recognised as honorary members.

Executive Director: Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Driekie Hay-Swemmer, delivered a keynote address in which she also congratulated the new Golden Key members.
