Top companies to exhibit at Career Fair

Jumpstart your career at this year’s Career Fair.

Hosted by the Co-operative Education Department, the fair provides CPUT students with the opportunity to interact and get first hand information from potential employers.

The fair promises an impressive line-up of companies with big names such as Eskom, Transnet, Mweb, Direct Axis, Truworths and Multichoice set to showcase their career opportunities.

And with close to 10 000 students graduating annually at CPUT, the fair is a prime networking opportunity for those set to walk-off with their qualifications at the end of this year.

This year, the fair will take place on 7 August at the Bellville Campus (Major Sports Hall) and on 14 August at the Cape Town Campus (Multipurpose Hall).

“Across the two campuses, we will have a total of 37 companies of which 19 will exhibit on the Bellville Campus targeting Engineering and Health and Wellness students and 18 will be on the Cape Town Campus targeting Business disciplines, Information Technology as well as various Applied Sciences disciplines,” says Manager of the Co-operative Education Department Fundiswa Nofemela.

The Department of Labour and the CPUT Student Counselling Department will also be on hand to assist students with CV and cover letter writing.

Two-day Career Fair begins at CPUT

CPUT’s annual Career Fair, which began on Wednesday, 17th August at the Bellville Campus, has drawn large numbers of students eager to learn more about the careers that await them. The two-day event allows potential employers to reach and interact with students in a relaxed atmosphere. With many of these organisations busy with their talent search and internship recruitment processes, a visit to the fair will ensure all students get first-hand information on these opportunities.

Fundiswa Nofemela, the Manager of the Co-operative Education Department, says organisations from the Financial, Management and Retail Sectors including ABSA, the Institute of Accounting and Commerce, Rio Tinto Management Services, Oasis Asset Management, EDCON, Fruit and Veg City &  Freshstop, Truworths as well as The Foschini Group will be in attendance.

“The Engineering Sector is represented by Aveng Grinaker-LTA, Haw and Inglis Civil Engineering, NMC, Siemens,Tellumat and Toyota, and from the Applied and Medical Science Sectors, Synexa Life Sciences, Mediclinic and Appletiser will be there. We also have a strong presence from the Government Sector represented by departments from both the National and Provincial Governments,” says Nofomela.

Nofomela adds that the Student Counselling Department, who run the ‘Jump Start Your Career Workshop’ which covers job search strategies, CV and cover letter writing as well as mock interviews will also be at the Career Fair. They’ll be ready to help the students with their CV's if needed.

“The Career Fair is one of the institutional events that increase the visibility of potential employers on our campuses and bring job opportunities closer to our students.  We therefore urge ALL students to visit the Fair and meet their future employers."

On Thursday 18th August, prizes were awarded to exhibitors with the best 'attention-grabbing and informative' stalls. Tellumat walked away with first prize, with Fruit & Veg City in second place and Truworths in third.

Excellence Awards 2013

The Co-operative Education Department hosted its bi-annual Excellence Awards to acknowledge the organizations that have partnered with CPUT to provide students with experiential learning opportunities.

Experiential learning opportunities is key to the development of all CPUT students as it provides them with an opportunity to apply what they learnt in class in real-life situations under the supervision of experienced mentors in the work place.

The work that is covered during this period is monitored and assessed according to requirements set out by specific departments.

CPUT Vice-Chancellor, Prof Vuyisa Mazwi-Tanga, thanked the organizations for providing students with opportunities to hone their skills in industry.

She says partnerships with industry are valued by the institution.

This year a total of 50 organizations were presented with certificates, while five SETAs received institutional recognition for their contribution towards the creation of training opportunities for students.
