Graduation fever hits CPUT

Hard work does pay off.

Family members and other well wishers are set to descend on the Bellville Campus to celebrate with the class of 2019 who will be graduating over six days.

For the first time in the history of CPUT, the university will be hosting 16 graduation ceremonies this summer from Saturday, the 7th to Friday, the 13th of December 2019.

The Summer Graduation season is the final graduation season for the year, following the Autumn Graduation, which took place in April.

This season, CPUT will confer 7 068 qualifications, of which 85 graduates will receive MTech degrees and 16 will obtain Doctoral degrees.

Qualifications will be awarded across the faculties of Applied Sciences (689 graduates), Business and Management Sciences (2 967), Education and Social Sciences (1 023), Engineering (1 198) Health and Wellness Sciences (336) as well as Informatics and Design (845).

It is expected that thousands of parents, guardians, spouses, partners and other supporters of graduates will attend the ceremonies.

CPUT has over 100 000 alumni, dating back to the university’s historic institutions, and the Class of 2019 will form part of that esteemed network. Annually close to 10 000 graduate from CPUT.

CPUT Ambassadors

From Cape Town to Johannesburg, CPUT is set to host alumni networking events across the country during the next few months.

The events are aimed at reconnecting with CPUT alumni, sharing in their successes and making sure they are up to date with developments at their alma mater.

Alumni Officer Val Deelman says it is important for the university to develop lifelong ties with alumni.

“We view alumni as our ambassadors. Their success in the world rubs off onto CPUT and this ensures that the university gets good recognition from companies and the public at large,” she says.

The series of alumni networking events recently kicked off in Gauteng. During the next few months, events will take place in Cape Town, East London, Port Elizabeth and KwaZulu Natal.

CPUT alumni living in Namibia will also get a chance to network, with an event planned for early next year.

For more information on the alumni networking events, see the CPUT website.

Upcoming alumni gatherings across South and Southern Africa

The RSVP’s are flying in thick and fast to the events planned for CPUT’s alumni in Gauteng, Namibia and Cape Town in the next few weeks. All graduates (alumni) of CPUT and the former Cape and Peninsula Technikons based in these areas are invited to attend.

Vice Chancellor Dr Prins Nevhutalu is jetting in specially to attend the Gauteng and Windhoek events. He’ll be using the opportunity to share both his vision for the university and CPUT successes and garner alumni input on taking the CPUT from good to great. Both the Gauteng (October 31) and Namibian (November 14) events cost R50 , with cocktail snacks, canapes and a cash bar included.

While the VC is unable to attend the Cape Town event scheduled for December 5th, it promises to be a fantastically festive affair where all our Cape-based graduates can reconnect and network. Alumni  Officer Val Deelman says alumni can expect good food, good company, light entertainment and lovely prizes to be raffled to boost the CPUT Bursary Fund.

It’ll be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Cape Town Upper Eastside hotel in Woodstock, with tickets costing R220 per person. To RSVP to this event, please email Helena Pietersen or call +27 21 460 3389/3786.

CPUT dominates at Design Indaba

CPUT’s reputation as a premier design school is being cemented by the excellent work being displayed by graduates and students at the Design Indaba Expo.

A number of alumni, who now enjoy profitable careers in various design disciplines, as well as current students, are displaying their work at the eagerly anticipated expo which is happening at the CTICC until March 2.

CPUT has a bold presence at the event with their own stand which is an interactive representation of the imaginethat* website.

The stand was a joint collaboration between Industrial- and Graphic Design students and lecturers and aims to create public awareness of the ground-breaking innovations happening at CPUT like the mTRIAGE emergency medical kit which can be used to quickly assess a patient’s vital statistics in combat situations.

CPUT is also running an interesting treasure-hunt style competition that encourages Design Indaba visitors to find their alumni and staff at the event by identifying them through a yellow asterisk badge they will be wearing.

Jewellery Design has one of the strongest showings of all courses with three of our students currently in line to win the AngloGold Ashanti Celestial Origins competition and at least seven graduates displaying their unique designs.

Alumnus Daluxolo Xusha, who stars in an upcoming drama series on SABC2, says his experience as a CPUT student prepared him for his acting career.

Dalu, as he is popularly known, graduated with a National Diploma in Consumer Science: Food and Nutrition last year and is currently finishing the shoot for the new drama, Signal Hill.

The 13 week-long series is a teen drama set in a Cape Town Model C School populated by children whose parents are in the LSM Group 5-8. The population is diverse and for the most part the students conform to school rules and regulations.

“I wouldn't be where I am today without the preparation and training I received from CPUT Arts Society,” says the tenacious actor. “The Society has prepared me for this role by giving us opportunities to perform around CPUT campuses as well as on big stages such as the National Arts Festival and the Cultural Week Festival at the Namibia University of Science and Technology.”

He expressed his gratitude for the consistent support he enjoyed from Student Development Officers Marysa Leukes and Anette Grobler with whom he worked during his time at the Society as well as when he was the chairperson of the CPUT Green Campus Initiative, a student society which promotes environmental care.

In Signal Hill Dalu plays Zachariah Thafeni who is called "Zakes" by his peers.

”Zakes is a young man who is loved by everyone at school and he follows my real name (Daluxolo) as he is the peace-maker between his friends Winnie and Amanda. But he has one big secret that no one knows about until one of his friends calls him out on it, something which ends up changing his life at school.”

Signal Hill starts airing from the 29 June at 17:00 on SABC 2 every Friday at the same time for 13 weeks.

Dalu will also be starring in two upcoming tv series later this year.
