CHEC 2010 Research Colloquium

A CHEC 2010 Research Colloquium will be hosted between the City of Cape Town, Provincial Government and higher education institutions in the Western Cape on 2 November 2009.

The aim of the workshop will be to share the plans, research conducted and research gaps/ requirements from City and Province with respect to the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as to provide an overview of 2010-related research, research capacity and possible research projects at higher education institutions in the Western Cape.

In order to prepare for this overview, we request that CPUT staff involved in 2010 research (and those considering 2010 research opportunities) complete a questionnaire so that the results can be collated as part of a joint presentation for higher education institutions.

Sports Tourism Research

A group of CPUT researchers are involved in groundbreaking research on international sporting events.

Ass Prof Kamilla Swart, from the Faculty of Business, recently returned from the London 2012 Olympics, where she and several Masters students conducted research on the event.

During the past few years, Ass Prof Swart conducted various sport-related research at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

This latest research project, explored the safety of tourists and locals during the sporting event.

As part of their research, the CPUT group interviewed a large number of tourists and locals and conducted 350 surveys in just one week.

For the first time ever, the research group made use of iPads to record the interviews.

“Nobody perceived it as unsafe. The people who were cautious about safety were the locals,” says Tracy Daniels, one of the students.

During the trip, Ass Prof Swart also presented a paper with Sport Management lecturer, Brendon Knott, at the annual International Sport Business Symposium.

The paper titled, “Mega-events and the Football Sport Tourist – From Beijing 2008 to South Africa 2010,” profiles the football sport tourists at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.

The group plan to conclude their research project during the next few months.

Extraordinary Women: Prof Kamilla Swart

Prof Kamilla Swart is a trailblazer in the field of sport and event tourism research.

A C3 rated researcher, her work focuses on mega-events and event policies, strategies and evaluations.

“With South Africa's penchant for hosting mega-events, a large part of my work has been focused on the 2010 FIFA World Cup, especially in relation to addressing the lack of knowledge of mega-events legacies (long-term impacts), especially within a developing context,” she says.

“It also attempts to examine why the potential impacts of mega-events are often not realised and ascertain what factors could be utilised to maximise the potential impacts, with a view to inform policy and best practice of achieving positive and sustainable legacies from future mega-events.”

Swart, who is the head of the Centre for Tourism Research in Africa at CPUT,  is currently in Rio de Janeiro at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games undertaking collaborative mega-event research with universities in Brazil.

One of her research projects is focused on understanding the perceptions of visitors regarding safety and security at the Olympic Games.

“Durban will be hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and my research focus will be on developing the research agenda based upon the lessons learned from South Africa's hosting of 2010,” adds the National Research Foundation C3 rated researcher.

Swart continues to present expert analyses on issues affecting her research field and facilitates sessions at conferences all over the world. She has also been awarded various national and international awards and serves on professional and advisory bodies.

Swart says commitment, passion, dedication and perseverance are the secret behind her success.

Her advice to other women in the research field is that they should never give up on their dreams.

“Always enquire and seek assistance and find research partners that you can aspire to and learn from.”
