WINNING TEAM: The WP team took top honours
Wednesday, 06 August 2025
The CPUT Cheerleaders have much to celebrate after four members were included in the Western Province team, which recently took top honours in a national competition.
Liyakhanya Matika, Sinalo Mendu, Mia Gertse and Melissa Kussie were selected for the Western Province poms team and became the first group of CPUT cheer athletes to earn their provincial colours.
“Following their selection, these athletes attended a few practice sessions with the rest of the provincial team in preparation for nationals, which eventually paid off when the team swooped gold at the competition, said Liyakhanya.
The South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association Nationals was held in Oudtshoorn recently.
Cheer captain Soné-Lee Jegels said she was incredibly proud of the team and everything they’ve accomplished this year.
“The dedication, discipline, and team spirit they've all shown have been nothing short of inspiring. Every stunt, every routine, every practice—it all paid off in the best way possible. Winning Cheer Champs is not just a title; it’s a reflection of the hard work, passion, and heart each one of them brought to the mat. They've made this season unforgettable, and I couldn’t be more honoured to be part of this journey with them."
