Men's Table Tennis Team won big at USSA Championships

The CPUT men's table tennis team achieved remarkable success at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Table Tennis Championships, winning two gold medals. After five days of intense competition at the Major Sports Hall on the Bellville Campus, the team showcased outstanding sportsmanship and commitment.

The USSA Table Tennis Championships, held annually, aim to identify South Africa's best student players across various categories. This year's edition saw a total of 12 tertiary institutions competing. CPUT hosted the championships after a successful event the previous year in Bloemfontein. The tournament also serves as a platform for players to be selected for international competitions.

The men's team made it to the medal playoffs in all tournament categories, including singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and team competition. The women's team qualified for three out of the five medal playoffs.

Mohamed Ally, a Sports Development Officer, commented on the team's performance, highlighting the growing talent and dedication within the university’s sports programme. "This year's tournament was highly contested, with players displaying exceptional skill and close competition, featuring major upsets and a new wave of emerging talent in both the men's and women's events."

The CPUT team secured two gold medals in the men's team event and men's doubles, along with three silver medals in mixed doubles, women's doubles, and men's singles. The men's team, consisting of Scelo Mkhetho, Ntuthuzelo Lusithi, and Everard Isaacs, won gold in the team event, while Ntuthuzelo and Everard claimed a second gold in the men's doubles.

In the women's division, Anande Kuse and Zizipho Ntlali earned silver in the women's doubles. The mixed doubles pair of Anande and Everard also finished with silver, while Ntuthuzelo took silver in the men's singles final.

As the tournament convenor, Ally expressed satisfaction with the event's execution. "The CPUT community came together once again to demonstrate our excellent organisational skills and hospitality. The volunteer support from other departments and the overall impression CPUT sports made on our guests was fantastic, and we all enjoyed top-quality table tennis."

Bowling for gold

CPUT’s Anneke Snyman has scooped the gold medal at the Bowls South Africa Junior Woman Masters championship, which was held at Wanderers Johannesburg.

The SA Masters is the most prestigious event on the Bowls South Africa annual calendar and only the top 12 junior female players (U/25) are nominated by the National Selectors to participate in the event.

TALENTED: Anneke and one of her four team members, CPUT Education student, Ezile Fourie, who received the bronze medal at the tournament

This was the first time Anneke, who is studying Dental Technology, competed in the Masters championship.

She says it was daunting to compete in such a high-level competition but managed to keep her eye on the ball.

Modest about her first-place win, Anneke says she would not have been able to achieve this goal if it was not for the support of her teammates, friends and family.

“I would like to thank all my friends and family for their continuous support,” she says.

Born and raised in Bredaarsdorp, Anneke started playing bowls at the age of thirteen. She soon realized her talent for the sport and started participating in local competitions.

After clinching the gold at the championships, Anneke now has her sights set on competing internationally.

Fellow teammate and CPUT Education student, Ezile Fourie, received the bronze medal at the tournament.

Pensioners put through their paces in Amazing Race

Spending your 94th birthday doing the rugby jive and racing around a mall is not high on most pensioners' list of things to do.

However thanks to enterprising CPUT Sports Management students this is exactly what Olive Johansen did last week.

Johansen, along with about 45 pensioners from the Belgravia Seniors Club participated in a mock Amazing Race through Vangate Mall.

FIT AS A FIDDLE: Olive Johansen celebrated her 94th birthday doing an Amazing Race organised by CPUT students through Vangate Mall.

Based on the concept of the popular reality television show, seniors completed various tasks in a bid to cross the finish line first.

Each group of seniors were given written clues in order to find flags of countries, which were hidden in certain stores.

They also completed painting tasks, a quiz on the 2011 World Cup and a basketball roadblock.

Btech student Keith Bruintjies said tasked with organising a Service Learning event, they opted for an “Amazing Race” format as it provided them with the opportunity to test the senior’s physical strength.

TEAMWORK: Sports Management student Somilanathi Shosha leads a group of seniors as they complete their tasks.

Sports Management Lecturer Etienne Joubert said the Service Learning Programme ties in with a module students completed this year, which looks at the recreational benefits of shopping centers.

“When it comes to activities, then everyone just thinks about sport centers or multipurpose halls. I wanted the students to start looking at shopping centers not only as a place to shop but as a recreational centre,” he said.

Johansen says she had a fantastic birthday and was pleased she could keep up with pensioners decades younger than her.

“I don’t smoke or drink and I mind my own business, that’s why I am still fit,” she said.

CPUT Basketball Players ‘slam dunk’ it for the National Women’s Team

TWO students have had the honour of representing their country and CPUT at a female basketball competition recently.

Ayanda Vumazonke, who is studying Marketing Management, and Tsebo Mahlophe,   who is enrolled in Sports Management, travelled to Johannesburg for their games against Algeria last month.

The South African team were playing as part of country’s preparations for the African Championship qualifiers which are scheduled to start in 2012.

Ayanda has been playing basketball since she was 10 years old and has represented SA in the under 18 squad.

She says the games against Algeria were great preparation for the future even though they won only one of their three.

“I think we need to work on building the provincial teams and strengthen their skills in order to have a strong national team,” she says.

“I would also like to say a word of hearty thanks to my teammates and our coach, who inspires us to be better players.”

The team’s coach Kimathi Toboti, who also coaches the provincial senior women’s and the university student’s national teams says the SA national squad has lots of potential.

“The team is a vibrant group of up-and-coming basketball players who can reach greater heights,” he says.

“I believe that all the players have the potential to make it to the national squad and even make a profession out of it, with the right coaching, practice and commitment to developing their game.”

Golf Business Academy student awarded US golf scholarship

Rushda Mallick, a second-year student at the Sports Management Department’s Golf Business Academy (GBA) has much to celebrate, after being awarded a full golfing scholarship to the United States. Twenty-year old Mallick has been swinging her clubs for over a decade under the tutelage of her golf-coach uncle and brother. She jetted off to the US in mid-August to attend the University of Eastern Michigan for the next four years.

CPUT’s Golf Business Academy offers a Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) accredited course focusing on the professional management and marketing of golf. In addition, training and coaching skills are developed to address the challenges of golf in South Africa. The course offers a specialised qualification with the National Diploma and BTech: Sports Management.

Coordinator at GBA and Sport Management Lecturer, Juanita Stoop, describes Mallick as a model student, who is modest about her achievements and always lends a hand to students and lecturers.

“We wish Rushda all the best in her experience in America and we know she’ll do us proud and carry the CPUT flag high.”

Mallick has represented the Western Cape Province as a Junior Golfer, winning her first tournament as Female Golfer of the Year for 2009. In 2006, Mallick joined the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation and having previously visited the Eastern Michigan University as part of a tour taken with the Foundation, she’s excited to be returning to the campus for a new experience.

“I am looking forward to perfecting my game and learning how to adapt in a new environment, although I’ll have to focus quite heavily on balancing my golf practice and academics’, says Mallick.

She adds that this opportunity is a great step in the right direction for her career, as dreams of coaching other young golfers in the future. Mallick is also a member of the Rondebosch Golf Club, and credits them for helping to raise funds for her visa and travel costs.

“I’m extremely grateful for their support and will remember my Club and my country whilst trying to represent them overseas. I hope that others who come after me won’t give up and remember that their chance will also come”, says Mallick.

Lotto awards R4.5m to Wellington campus for sport facilities upgrade

Lotto awards R4.5m to Wellington campus for sport facilities upgrade

Sport facilities at the Wellington Campus are set for a major revamp after the institution secured funding of more than R4 million from the National Lotteries Board.

The funding of R4.5m was awarded to the institution after Tyrone Africa, Sports Coordinator at the campus, submitted a proposal to the Board highlighting the need for an upgrade of the sport facilities.

Although Wellington Campus has a thriving sport culture, with a large number of students holding Boland colours in various sporting codes, facilities are dilapidated and hamper the development of the institution’s sports programme.

The current facilities are also preventing the institution from offering their sport expertise and facilities to the broader community.

However, Africa said sporting activities in Wellington will be boosted with the funding.

“The upgrade of facilities will allow us to expand and deepen our already existent teaching, training and sports programmes to include all communities and schools in the Boland area,” he said.

The proposal submitted identified nine areas for development. Of the nine, funding was awarded for development of two areas. This includes the revamp of the tennis and netball courts and the upgrade of the rugby fields.

Africa said funds will be used to resurface the six tennis and netball courts. Lighting will also be installed at the courts, which will allow students and the community to utilise the courts after-hours.

However, the bulk of the funds will be used for the installation of high mast lighting on the two rugby fields. The current lightning is inadequate and only provides light for one of the fields.

Africa said the lights, which will cost close to R3m, are much needed because students are only available for sport activities after 5pm during weekdays.

“We want to install six high mast lighting poles that can cover the two rugby fields,” said Africa .

He said proper lighting will allow students and the community to utilise the fields optimally.

“We are very excited about this. We want the Wellington campus to become the hub of sport activities in this community,” said Africa .

Wellington Campus Manager, Ben Turner, said the upgrade of the sport facilities will ensure the development of the institution and community sports programmes.

“There is a lot of options open to us now,” he said.

Turner said they are hoping to complete the upgrade by the end of the academic year. He said news of the funding has already spread in the Boland community.

“The campus community and the broader community are very excited,” he said.

The Wellington Campus is planning to submit another proposal to National Lotteries Board for funding for development of several other sports facilities. Facilities identified for an upgrade include the club house, hockey field and the student centre as well as the installation of a synthetic athletic track.

“We’ve got big ideas for the Wellington campus, but we will have to phase them in over time,” said Turner.

Table Tennis Stars

CPUT’s Table Tennis team is defending their title at the University Sports South Africa Tournament, which takes place this week.

The team, managed by Llweyln Le Kay scooped first place in last year’s tournament and are positive that they will once again bring home the gold.

“We have a very strong team this year,” says Le Kay.

Taking place at the National Institute of Higher Education in Kimberley, this year’s event has attracted some of South Africa best university table tennis players.

But the CPUT team is well prepared for the week-long event.

The team followed a stringent training programme during the past few weeks, which was overseen by coach and former CPUT table tennis team player, Rudwin Gertze.

Gertze says the team performed well during their recent league games and also in a number of friendly matches.

“I am sure that they will do well this year,” says Gertze.

Team member Kirshwan Stein, who has been playing table tennis for the past 11 years, says the team is looking forward to showing-off their skills at the tournament.

Sport Management Outreach

A group of senior citizens showed-off their sporting skills during an outreach event organised by the third-year Sport Management class.

The event, which took place at the Greenpoint Urban Park, saw members of the Cape Peninsula Organisation for the Aged partake in various activities under the theme “Amazing Race”.

Based on the concept of the popular reality television show, the seniors completed various tasks in a bid to cross the finish line first.

The event also aimed at introducing and educating senior citizens on the importance of recreation and urban parks.

One of the participants of the day, 95-year-old Diane Meyer would put most of today’s youth to shame with her veering energy and determination.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the activities. I find it very important to keep fit, and the event offered the perfect opportunity to get moving,” says Meyer.

The teamwork between the students was undeniable and their enthusiasm and cooperation allowed the day to be a great success.

“The students did an amazing job. They responded brilliantly, and conducted and presented an event that the participants will always remember,” says CPUT Sports Coordinator, Quinton Summers.

The event was run in conjunction with the Service Learning Unit.

New Golf Business Academy brings sport management skills to the fore

CPUT is taking the lead in sport management training in the Western Cape with the rollout of the Golf Business Academy.

The academy, which is the only one of its kind based at a tertiary institution in the province, will equip students with the necessary skills to work in the golf industry.

Students will follow the Sport Management Diploma Programme, but specialise in Golf Business Academy courses.

In 2008, CPUT, together with the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA), set up an advisory board to establish the viability of offering this specialised course.

Co-ordinator of the course, Juanita Stoop, said with an increase in golf facilities and golf tourism in South Africa, CPUT saw the need to address the skills gap in this industry.

Stoop said the course is aimed at “amateur” golf players.

“We have a lot of keen golfers, but not everyone will make it big,” she said.

She said the course offers these players an opportunity to establish a career in the sport, from managing of golf clubs to coaching.

All the courses are PGA accredited and students will also be required to complete experiential training at PGA accredited sites.

“PGA professionals will assess the course once a year. We will also do exams that have been set up by the PGA,” she said.

Courses offered by the Golf Business Academy include golf psychology, equipment technology, golf coaching, rules of golf, swing theory, green keeping and club house management. Students will also spend a large amount of time on the golf course.

Stoop said, “They will be in a green environment three times a week. Students will play an 18 hole golf course every second week.”

Yolanda Duma, one of the several students who enrolled for the programme, said she is looking forward to the year.

Duma, is a member of the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation and has already won several junior golf tournaments.

“I really enjoy golf a lot and want to have a career in the sport,” she said.

The student, who hails from the Eastern Cape, said she would like to be a golf coach when she completes the course.

Duma enrolled for the course, along with her sister Siviwe, who has also won numerous golf tournaments.

Sport Management Department staff members visit USA

Two Sport Management Department staff members, Prof Brendon Knott and Ashley Jacobs, were recently involved in the Empowering New Voices through Education and Sports Training (ENVEST) exchange programme.

Sport managementENVEST is an initiative that focuses on using sport as a vehicle for youth development and social change. The programme encourages the upskilling and development of sport coaches, practitioners and other industry experts working with community members in their respective locations. The staff members served as coordinators, assisting the United States of America (USA) coordinators in formulating online teaching materials and developing the schedule/programme for the South African delegation’s visit to the USA.

Knott and Jacobs travelled to North Carolina, USA with ten coaches from organisations around South Africa (SA). The SA delegation spent two weeks in the USA, attending leadership workshops at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and having the opportunity to observe and run practical soccer sessions at North Carolina Football Club. The delegation also had the opportunity to tour the NCSU campus and sport facilities, attend local sporting events and rub shoulders with their American counterparts. These moments allowed the delegation to share information and experiences with their US counterparts which will ultimately benefit the community members that these coaches are working with.

The US delegation will be visiting South Africa in July 2024. “We look forward to co-hosting them with our partner organisations around South Africa,” said Knott.
