Sport Management Department moving house

The Department of Sport Management will be relocating from the Mowbray Campus to the Newlands Cricket Ground (NCG).

The Department has been located in Mowbray since the year 2000, but the campus is relatively small and the Department was unable to develop their academic programme due to space and facility restrictions.

“The Wicket Building at NCG will be the new home for the Sport Management Department,” said Head of Department, Prof Simeon Davies.

“We are involved in regular meetings with the development team and key stakeholders who are over seeing this major construction project. We have plans in place for a phased move of equipment and staff from May-June 2021, with a view to being fully operational and ready to deliver the academic project for the second semester 2021.”

Davies added that following strategic planning sessions and input from the Department’s Sport Industry Advisory Board they realised that with the introduction of new qualifications it would be necessary to consolidate the academic programme onto one campus.

In order to respond to the challenges of the 4IR and to produce globally competitive graduates the new campus at the NCG would be at the cutting edge of technology because a smart university such as CPUT empowers society, he argued.

“Furthermore, it was also recognised that with the opportunity to take space at the iconic and world-renowned NCG that the Sport Management programme would have unrivalled access and exposure to sport events and experiences, which would provide outstanding opportunities for the students’ experiential training.”

Davies said that following a sequence of meetings with the CEO of Western Province Cricket, Nabeal Dien, in 2015, during which they were made aware of the proposed NCG development the Department drafted a formal proposal to relocate to the new facility.

The NCG, which hosted its first international test match in 1889, is getting an R800 million makeover.

“This process gained the full support of the Vice Chancellor, Prof [Chris] Nhlapo, along with Council, and the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande,” he continued. “It was clear that the opportunity to move to NCG would provide a teaching and learning environment ideally suited for our programme, and [more] importantly providing the platform to showcase One SmartCPUT as a leader in technological innovation and educational development.”

He added that the Department is very excited about the relocation “which will provide the students with a modern learning environment where we can use smart technology to achieve excellence”.

“We believe that the new location at NCG will allow us to deliver the academic project in a state-of-the-art facility, which will benefit all of our students, and also allow us to market our programme effectively.

“The move to the internationally-acclaimed NCG will provide the space and facilities for a multi-cultural ecosystem that will facilitate an educational experience that prepares our staff and students at all levels, for a global environment.”

CPUT Koshuis Rugby tournament

It’s rugby season at CPUT.

During the next few weeks, several rugby teams representing residences as well as day students will take to the field in the hopes of being crowned the top CPUT residence rugby team.

The CPUT Koshuis Rugby tournament is now in its second year and six teams will compete for the coveted floating trophy.

Manager of the CPUT Wellington Rugby Club and chairperson of the Sports Forum, Conrad Du Plessis says last year only teams from the Wellington Campus competed in the competition.

However, this year the competition has been opened to all CPUT residences and day teams.

“We’ve had a good response,” says Du Plessis.

Four teams from Wellington Campus are competing in the tournament as well as teams from the Cape Town and Bellville Campuses.

“The goal is to grow the tournament and get more CPUT students involved in rugby.”

The tournament kicked off on Thursday, 26 February and will see all six teams play against one another.

“The top two teams on the log will play in the final. The teams ending third and fourth will play against one another for third place,” says Du Plessis.

The matches will take place at the Gardens sports field in Cape Town as well as on the rugby sports fields at the Bellville and Wellington Campuses.

The third and fourth playoff as well as the cup final will take place on Wednesday, 25 March 2015 at the Wellington Campus Rugby sports field.

All staff and students are welcome to attend the matches.

FNB CPUT in Varsity Shield final

Defending champions FNB CPUT will go head to head with FNB WSU (Walter Sisulu University) in what promises to be an epic Varsity Shield final.

The final battle is scheduled to take place at 7 pm at Tuks Stadium on Sunday, 9 May and will be broadcast on Supersport channel 211.

The Tekkies, as the FNB CPUT is affectionately known, have been impressive this season and are second on the log. The team won all but one of their matches, losing only against their final opponent, FNB WSU in round 6.

The team performed as follows in the first six rounds:

  • Round 1: FNB CPUT 36 – FNB UFH 20
  • Round 2: FNB CPUT 68 – FNB Rhodes 8
  • Round 3: FNB CPUT 109 – FNB DUT 6
  • Round 4: FNB CPUT 54 – FNB TUT 20
  • Round 5: FNB CPUT 53 – FNB UKZN 12
  • Round 6: FNB CPUT 5 – FNB WSU 39

There will be no promotion or relegation after the 2021 season. Instead, the bottom two teams on the combined 2021-2022 FNB Varsity Cup log will be relegated to the FNB Varsity Shield, while the last-placed team on the combined 2021-2022 FNB Varsity Shield log will fall out of the tournament.
