FNB CPUT secures victory at home

FNB CPUT delivered a commanding performance to secure a convincing 56-25 victory over FNB SPU at Bellville Campus.

The visitors struck first in the opening minutes, with flyhalf Chadwin Sellidon successfully kicking a penalty to give FNB SPU an early lead. However, FNB CPUT responded quickly and assertively. Kieran Naidoo scored a try in the corner to equalize, and then Samukelisiwe Madonsela powered over for a converted try, shifting the momentum firmly in favor of the hosts. Although FNB SPU managed to narrow the gap with a try from Kabelo Keagile, FNB CPUT regained control with clinical finishing. Jacquin Jacobus and Dwayne Atkins added further tries, allowing the hosts to take a comfortable 27-10 lead into halftime.

The second half was one-sided, as FNB CPUT's attacking dominance persisted. Lihle Kula, Madonsela, and Atkins all scored tries, while flyhalf Reuben Noble added important conversions to keep the score moving. Kula later completed his brace, capping off an impressive individual performance.

FNB SPU showed late resistance with two tries from Jaiden Faviers, but it was not enough to stop FNB CPUT’s momentum, as the hosts’ precise execution secured a comprehensive victory on home ground.

FNB UWC wins Cape Derby

FNB UWC overpowered FNB CPUT 51-32 in a high-scoring FNB Varsity Shield clash at UWC Stadium on Friday evening.

The home side set the tone early, breaking the deadlock in the third minute when scrumhalf Dywane Badenhorst dotted down following a powerful rolling maul, with fullback Aaron Swartz adding the extras. Although FNB CPUT responded through hooker Lindisipho Kula from a lineout drive, FNB UWC’s dominance up front proved decisive.

Centre Hlomla Ncana was instrumental in the first half, crossing twice - including a superb finish in the corner as FNB UWC built a commanding 22-5 halftime lead.

The visitors showed renewed intent after the break, with Dwayne Atkins grabbing two tries to keep FNB CPUT in contention. However, FNB UWC’s forward pack continued to impose themselves, with winger Amisi Juma and substitute Keno Alexander extending the advantage.

Ncana completed a memorable hat-trick in the 69th minute before Leighton Damon and Juma added further tries to seal the result. FNB CPUT fought until the end, adding late scores through Jacquin Jacobus and Yibanathi Phoncana, but FNB UWC had the final say. FNB CPUT defeats FNB Madibaz

FNB CPUT stunned last year's runner's up Madibaz 30-20 in a thrilling encounter at the CPUT Sports Stadium in Bellville on Friday.

FNB Madibaz opened the scoring in the ninth minute when flank Johan van Zyl crashed over after a series of powerful pick-and-go phases. The conversion attempt went astray, leaving the score at 5-0. Madonsela added his second in the 36th minute after good work with Noah Peuker, and this time flyhalf Reuben Noble converted to give the home side a 12-10 lead. Just a minute later, Noble crossed the line to extend the lead to 17-0, sending his side into halftime with momentum firmly in their favour.

In the second half, FNB Madibaz closed the gap in the 56th minute when centre Qurin Cupido crossed for a try, cutting the deficit to 17-15. FNB CPUT’s forward pack responded with authority just eight minutes later, powering a dominant driving maul that hooker Lihle Kula finished to extend their lead to 22-15.

Winger Dwayne Atkins extended the lead 10 minutes before the final whistle for the hosts – FNB CPUT held a 27-15 cushion. Noble added a crucial penalty in the 77th minute, extending FNB CPUT’s lead to 30-15 and putting the game firmly out of reach.

The game is scheduled to start at 5pm and will also be broadcast live on SuperSport.

The tickets cost R30 per person and only 2 000 tickets are available.

The FNB Varsity Shield and FNB Varsity Cup 2026 season was officially launched with a vibrant event at the V&A Waterfront amphitheatre, setting the tone for another epic year of student rugby and what promises to be another unforgettable season.

SuperSport presenter Cato Louw hosted interviews with the captains, giving fans insight into team expectations, leadership roles, and the excitement building ahead of the season which begins on 13 February for the Shield competition and 16 February for the opening round of the Cup tournament. The live show blended broadcast-ready moments with crowd interaction, reinforcing the tournament’s “Who’s NXT?” narrative and spotlighting the next generation of rugby talent.

The launch also featured an explanation of the newly introduced Tap or Kick rule aimed at promoting attacking rugby by giving teams who score a try to go for the conventional conversion or opt for a tap on the 22m line where they will have 120 seconds to score another try and gain a further 5 points.

Student elected as new USSA Table Tennis Chairperson

Student elected as new USSA Table Tennis Chairperson

Ntuthuzelo Lusithi, a Diploma in Mathematical Sciences student, has achieved another significant milestone by being elected as the Chairperson of the USSA Table Tennis Association.

He was part of the CPUT men’s team, alongside Scelo Mkhetho and Everard Isaacs, which won gold in the team event. Additionally, Ntuthuzelo and Everard secured a second gold in the men’s doubles at the recent USSA Table Tennis Championships held at the Major Sports Hall on the Bellville Campus.

Now, Ntuthuzelo aims to contribute to the development of sports at universities across South Africa. Hailing from Katlehong, Germiston, he takes pride in witnessing the commitment of both players and administrators in supporting youth involvement in table tennis. “I feel entrusted by the players and management to promote our unique sport at the university level and ultimately create an international impact.”

A passionate, driven, and resilient individual, Ntuthuzelo had little reaction when his name was announced as chairperson. Instead, his thoughts quickly turned to his plans for changes and growth in the sport. “My mandate is simple: let’s get to work. I believe that if we want to see change and growth in our sport, we need to put in the effort. This means we will start by improving certain areas so that our neighbouring institutions and the rest of the country can join us.”

During his two-year term, he intends to pursue these goals diligently. Reflecting on the recently concluded championships, he feels he performed exceptionally well, stating, “Some have even said I was their player of the tournament.”

He acknowledges that playing in the Cape Town Table Tennis Premier League was beneficial for his development. “Even though many were against my decision to join the Premier League with my club Duinefontein, I knew it would pay off in the long run.” Ntuthuzelo reached three out of four finals: the team event finals where they defended their gold from the previous year, the doubles finals which they won alongside Everard Isaacs, and the singles final, where he unfortunately lost to Keenen Jooste.

“My performance was inspired by my CPUT team and the effort they put in. I wanted to show them that success is possible.”

He has been playing for about eight years, and during that time, he has achieved quite a bit, especially when he was part of Gauteng Central, where his potential was first recognised. One of his career highlights has been making the USSA national team for two consecutive years and helping to defend their gold medal. "Getting silver at the CUCSA (Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association) Games, where we could have won gold, is a significant accomplishment for me because there’s no greater feeling than representing your country. I made the USSA National Squad again, and I hope we can compete in the World Student Games next year in Germany. That would not only benefit us as players but also promote the sport in our country. I truly hope we can go and compete.”

He adds, “I hope to cause some upsets if we go to Germany because I believe we can make this happen. It’s time for Table Tennis to shine, and that can happen if we are given the opportunity.”

He attributes his achievements to discipline. “There have been days when I didn’t want to train or play, but I still went anyway, and that’s not easy. Having honest friends who keep me grounded and supportive of my goals has helped me, especially when they call me out on my lazy days and keep me in check. My family, friends, and others motivate me because I know that every day, someone out there looks up to me. I want to show that someone from a township can work hard and make waves in the world.”

He draws inspiration from various attributes of different people, including those outside of sports, and combines these lessons to improve himself every day. “Mr [Mohamed] Ally, our Sports Development Officer, has taught me a lot about CPUT sports and high performance, guiding me even behind the scenes.”

He states, “People can expect that I will give my best with whatever resources I’m provided. I have a strong and diverse team working alongside me, and I believe we will all strive for what’s best for the sport.”

Ntuthuzelo, who never backs down from what he believes in, views this as an opportunity to showcase “what I am capable of doing.” He invites everyone to join them, saying, “The more, the merrier! But they should be prepared to have their minds blown; if they are used to ping pong, we will introduce them to Table Tennis.”

Ally commented, “Ntuthuzelo has grown by leaps and bounds since arriving at CPUT. He is multi-talented and never settles for anything less than success.”

Tekkies triumph in thrilling finish

The CPUT rugby men’s first team, affectionately known as Tekkies, delivered a heart-stopping performance on Saturday, that left the university community proud.

In a dramatic finale league game at Vygieskraal Stadium, the team came from behind to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Hamediehs RFC, overturning a 16-26 deficit with just five minutes left on the clock. Two brilliant tries in the dying moments sealed a 28-26 victory, ensuring CPUT’s place in the WP Super League B for 2026 and preventing relegation.

The match showcased these young men's resilience, determination, and sheer willpower. Tekkies’ journey this season has been far from easy — they faced narrow heartbreak in three one-point losses earlier in the campaign. Yet, under the steely leadership of Captain Kieran Naidoo, they demonstrated the kind of unity and brotherhood that defines championship rugby.

Reflecting on the season, Prof Mujahid Aziz praised the performance of all CPUT rugby teams, including the U20, 2nd, 3rd, and ladies’ teams, acknowledging the incredible challenges they faced in a tough league. “These teams have made us proud throughout the season,” he said, highlighting the talent, commitment, and passion displayed by all players.

The coaching and management staff, led by Coach Alastair Theys, received special commendation for their dedication over the past twenty weeks. Their rugby knowledge, motivation, commitment and ability to nurture young talent have kept Tekkies competitive at this high level. Theys emphasised that the Super League B campaign provided excellent preparation for the upcoming Varsity Shield competition, ensuring the team continues to grow in skill and resilience.

Cheerleaders soar to success

The CPUT Cheerleaders have much to celebrate after four members were included in the Western Province team, which recently took top honours in a national competition.

Liyakhanya Matika, Sinalo Mendu, Mia Gertse and Melissa Kussie were selected for the Western Province poms team and became the first group of CPUT cheer athletes to earn their provincial colours.

“Following their selection, these athletes attended a few practice sessions with the rest of the provincial team in preparation for nationals, which eventually paid off when the team swooped gold at the competition, said Liyakhanya.

The South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association Nationals was held in Oudtshoorn recently.

Cheer captain Soné-Lee Jegels said she was incredibly proud of the team and everything they’ve accomplished this year.

“The dedication, discipline, and team spirit they've all shown have been nothing short of inspiring. Every stunt, every routine, every practice—it all paid off in the best way possible. Winning Cheer Champs is not just a title; it’s a reflection of the hard work, passion, and heart each one of them brought to the mat. They've made this season unforgettable, and I couldn’t be more honoured to be part of this journey with them."

Marimba band joins World Record attempt

The CPUT Marimba Band is set to participate in a Guinness World Records title attempt, scheduled to take place at the GrandWest Grand Arena next month.

Over 1 000 marimba players from across South Africa and Zimbabwe are coming together on 2 August to attempt a Guinness World Records title for the largest Marimba ensemble in the world.

The event, themed "United in Harmony", will not only attempt to dethrone Guatemala's standing record of 505 players but plans to double it – putting South Africa firmly on the global stage for a record-breaking celebration of culture, community and music.

It is expected to bring together players aged 8 to 62, from over 70 schools and institutions, representing every province in South Africa and two schools from Zimbabwe.

The ensemble will perform a ten-minute medley of “Waka Waka” and “Jerusalema", both powerful anthems of South African pride and unity. The record-breaking moment will be followed by a gold medal ceremony and a celebration concert featuring live entertainment from professional marimba bands, DJs, as well as a headline act from Goodluck! The event will feature Carl Wastie as the MC.

The attempt by social enterprise Marimba Jam will not be the first. In 2018, they gathered 241 girls on Women’s Day to unofficially break Australia's standing record – but without the official Guinness World Records stamp due to resource constraints. Now, with full international oversight and a Guinness World Records Adjudicator flying in from London, it’s all systems go.

Cherice Mangiagalli, Student Development Officer: Sport, Arts and Culture, said she was incredibly proud of the CPUT Marimba Band for their achievement in being approved to participate in this world record attempt.

“This is a significant accomplishment that reflects the band's dedication, talent, and the vibrant musical culture fostered at CPUT. Their participation in such a prestigious event not only highlights their individual skills but also showcases the university's commitment to arts and culture and its support for its students' endeavours. This recognition on a global stage is a testament to their hard work and a source of immense pride for the entire CPUT community."

Tickets for the event can be purchased here.

Basketball in transition

Basketball in transition

At the heart of the vibrant District Six, a long-awaited dream began to take shape. The Sports Arts and Culture (SAC) Department at CPUT had tirelessly worked towards enhancing sports infrastructure for years.

With each passing season, the enthusiasm of students echoed through the campus, but the sorely needed facilities remained just a vision. However, that vision finally transformed into reality as the SAC Department proudly unveiled two brand-new basketball courts recently. On a rainy day, students gathered at the District Six Campus, a tangible excitement buzzing in the air.

The SAC Department initiated this project with the help of CPUT alumnus, Matthew Skade, who connected them with the donors, Giants of Africa. This organisation is dedicated to building basketball courts across Africa, and this particular court marks the 40th one they have constructed on the continent, shared Frans Mpho Mamabolo, Manager: SAC Department. The event, which took place during Youth Month, aims to contribute to youth development at CPUT and in the surrounding District Six community.

Mamabolo reflected: “As the SAC Department, we are excited that this project came to fruition as it has been our goal to develop sports infrastructure at CPUT, but in particular at the District Six Campus… This court will change things around. The court can be shared with netball as well. The existence of this court will highlight the sport of basketball on our campus. Our students will have more time on the courts now, unlike before where they were restricted by lighting. Our Bellville outdoor courts don’t have lights.”

Mamabolo stated that the costs for revamping the courts were fully covered by donors, while the university contributed by upgrading the lighting on the courts. In his message to basketball and netball players, as well as the students in general, he expressed the following: “Here is the new revamped facility, let's use it responsibly, as the university doesn’t have the finances to fix facilities that are deliberately damaged. This facility is ours; students and the community around us can use it for our sports development and wellness. Let's all be active in one way or the other, a ‘healthy body is a healthy mind’”.

He continued: “I see this catapulting the sport of basketball at this university to another level. This will assist its objective of being a priority code. CPUT has three priority codes, which are Rugby, Football, and Basketball.”

Warona Mbothwe, an assistant coach and CPUT alumnus, stated, “This initiative is a positive step forward for the growth of basketball and sports in general at CPUT.”

The team captain, Nokuthula Magoso, said: “This court means everything to us. It’s more than just a place to play, it’s a space that brings us together. We finally have a home, spacious enough compared to the court we used at Mowbray Campus, and that boosts our spirit and motivates us to train harder, play better, and represent CPUT with everything we have.”

Mandela Day boxing treat for CPUT

Western Cape boxing enthusiasts should prepare for an action-packed Saturday as the CPUT Boxing Club hosts the third Annual Mandela Boxing Challenge at the Major Sports Hall on Bellville Campus.

The event will feature a total of 20 bouts, including five women’s matches on Saturday, 19 July 2025. This tournament honours the legacy of former President Nelson Mandela and aims to promote boxing within the university community. “The event is designed to celebrate the life of Mandela as a boxer and an educated individual,” says Dr Mdingi Mvemve, the manager of the CPUT Boxing Club.

Past tournaments have showcased boxers who have since made a name for themselves in the professional arena, such as Likho Nxele. She had a successful professional debut in April 2025, winning her first fight by technical knockout. A few days later, she graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree from CPUT. “She currently holds an unbeaten professional boxing record and is a qualified teacher. She was both our student and boxer,” Mvemve adds.

Mvemve, who also serves as a Lecturer in Economics and Management Science and Accounting, anticipates a maximum attendance of 500 people at the Major Sports Hall. Among the highlights of this event is Bukelwa Zantsi, a CPUT student who recently won a Silver Medal at the National Boxing Championships in Pretoria. She will be facing Lukhangele Ngcaza, the Western Cape Female Champion, in what is expected to be an explosive grudge match.

The doors will open to the crowd at 11:00 AM, and, as with all campus events, no alcohol is permitted. Free tickets will be available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.

CPUT Netball team members off to Sun City

The CPUT Netball team has cultivated a culture of holistic empowerment, culminating in the remarkable achievement of three members being selected for the Western Cape franchise, the Tornadoes, to compete in the upcoming 2025 Telkom Netball League.

This league begins this weekend at Sun City, showcasing the dedication and talent of CPUT players and technical staff as they embark on this exciting journey.

Ziyanda Mwezo, a 22-year-old third-year student: Bachelor of Education in the Intermediate Phase, has been chosen for goal defence and goalkeeping roles, showcasing her talent and determination. This selection reflects her hard work and passion, inspiring others to strive for their own goals.

CPUT Netball Ladies coach Babalwa Madikane has been appointed as the assistant coach of the Tornadoes. Meanwhile, CPUT Netball Ladies General Manager and assistant coach for both men’s and women’s teams, Aviwe Mgudu, was selected as the team manager. Ziyanda, who has been playing since Grade 4, “was fortunate to have a coach, Frank Xaba, who recognised my potential and encouraged me to try out for the defensive position. I am forever grateful for his guidance, as it has allowed me to develop my skills and grow as a player”.

Throughout her high school years, she had the opportunity to participate in the South African School Netball (SASN) tournaments, which helped her to hone her skills and gain valuable experience in competitive netball. Ziyanda, who tends to be shy around people she doesn't know well, began her university career in 2023 and was thrilled to be selected to play for the CPUT Netball A team. “This opportunity allowed me to take my game to the next level and compete against top-level opponents. I also met Babalwa Madikane, affectionately known as Coach Babes, who sharpened my defensive skills and served as my U21 Coach. Her guidance and mentorship have been instrumental in my growth as a player.”

She took part in the 2023 USSA tournament, which offered her a valuable opportunity to showcase her impressive skills and learn from other talented players. A highlight of her netball career was her selection for the Western Province U21 A team, allowing her to compete in the Spar National Championships. “This experience not only allowed me to represent my province but also gave me the opportunity to compete against the best young players in the country.”

In 2024, Ziyanda had an outstanding season with the Western Province Ladies Senior team, winning gold in both the Interprovincial tournament and the Spar National Championships. She was also selected to play for USSA and had the honour of serving as the captain of the CPUT ladies' team, which she described as both a privilege and a significant responsibility. In 2025, after two unsuccessful trials, “I was overjoyed to be selected for the Western Cape Tornadoes”. “This achievement is a testament to my hard work, dedication, and perseverance.”

Ziyanda, who is “somewhere between being an introvert and an extrovert”, says: “I'm still learning to navigate different social situations. Overall, I am thrilled to have achieved these milestones and look forward to continuing my growth and development as a netball player. I am excited to see what the future holds for me and [I] am committed to working hard to achieve my goals.”

Being informed that she was selected as the team manager for Western Cape Tornadoes “is truly a humbling and emotional moment for Mgudu. “It’s more than just an appointment, it's a proud milestone that takes me back to where it all began: the small villages of Matatiele, where I grew up”. She says this achievement represents years of hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering belief not just in herself, “but in the young people I’ve had the privilege to lead”.

Through her journey with CPUT Netball and in the Western Province high-performance environment, she came to understand the value of discipline, teamwork, and building systems that elevate both athletes and support staff. She attributes her growth and achievements to the principles she learned at CPUT: resilience, humility, and never giving up. “The path hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has shaped me into the manager and leader I am today. At CPUT Netball, we’ve built a culture that believes in empowering players holistically, and I bring that same vision to Western Cape Netball.”

Madikane wouldn't have been chosen as the Tornadoes Assistant Coach if she weren't resilient or if she didn't push harder and stronger to achieve her goals, work hard, and if she weren't disciplined. “These few personal qualities brought me to this stage. I grabbed the opportunity with both hands and never stopped showing up, so that makes me realise that our hard work doesn't go unnoticed. This is giving me hope that CPUT can produce more players who can participate in that platform.”

Cheerleaders clinch top spot

The CPUT Cheerleaders kicked off their season by winning the first prize in their category at the Western province Majorettes and Cheerleaders Association (WPMCA) 1st Regional Competition.

The team of 11 cheerleaders took the top spot in the Tertiary: Performance Cheer: Hip Hop Teams category.

Team Leader Tumi Matlala expressed her joy over the team’s outstanding performance.

“It feels like a powerful glimpse of what’s ahead. My team has been putting in the extra hours, and it’s clear that the hard work is already paying off.

“Our preparation consisted of a lot of dedication and hard work. We had other cheer commitments for CPUT sports events that we could not neglect so that meant putting more hours in our practices. It was difficult, having to stay until late on campus but it was definitely worth it in the end.”

Cherice Mangiagalli, Student Development Officer: Sport, Arts and Culture, also expressed her pride.

"Congratulations to the CPUT Titans on achieving first place in their first WPMCA competition. I believe that this is a great start, and I look forward to seeing how they continue to progress throughout the remainder of the competitions. All the best, Titans!"

FNB CPUT hungry to achieve more

In a spine-chilling fixture between longtime adversaries, FNB CPUT and FNB UWC, the home side edged a nerve-wracking match 28-27. For this historic victory, FNB CPUT relied on their game drivers to make the correct calls and on the day, it proved to benefit them.

“We find ourselves adding one percent more effort collectively to achieve our objectives in the tournament,” says team captain, Kieran Naidoo. Kieran says the team is feeling hungry to achieve more, after a tough rebuilding phase last year. “It was very tough to shake off the negativity but through actions and the backing of our coaching staff we were very determined to put CPUT rugby back on the pedestal we found it. It’s a great feeling making history being the first CPUT team to beat UWC, however, we remain humble and grounded as we have not achieved what we want to yet.”

CPUT went into the match with an underdog tag but Kieran says: “We are an isolated camp that is not fazed by labels or titles as we know how distracting it can be. Going into the derby we pulled tighter to each other, after a disappointing performance against Varsity College.”

The modest third-year Sport Management student says the team is not carried away by this victory and they don’t want to think or talk about the final or play offs. We have not thought as far as a play off as yet, we take one game at a time as we know how costly looking too far ahead can be.”

The team has a tough encounter against FNB Madibaz away in Gqeberha on Friday, 28 March and that’s where the team’s focus shall remain says Kieran. “It is incredible working under the coaching staff of coach, Alistair Theys, Ramone Samuels, Jongi Nokwe and Johan Pedro as they have a wealth of experience but allow us as the team to make decisions not controlling our every move, allowing us to grow and develop experience for big game.”

Scorers

FNB CPUT: 28 (18)

Tries: Noah Pekeur, Jacquin Jacobus, Iwaan Bloys.

FNB UWC: 27 (17)

Tries: Conwill Conradie, Bevan Simons, Hlomla Ncana.

FNB Player That Rocks: Denley Krid Adams

The full FNB CPUT were: Nkosephayo Ngema, Kyle Ahrendse, Kieran Delaan Naidoo, Keanan Benjamin Odwa Rolosi, Simphiwe Gift Thabede, Nqaba Nkonyeni, Philasande Ngcobo, Denley Krid Adams, Jason January, Oyintando Honour Maseti, Iwaan Bloys, Carick Ethan Kustoor, Jacquin Farrol Jacobus, Noah Matthew Pakeur, Keewan Titus.

Kgati player skips her way to success

A fourth-year student’s superb rope-skipping skills earned her a place in the Western Cape Kgati team who recently jumped their way to a silver medal at the National Indigenous Games Tournament.

Tourism Management student and Kgati player Abenathi Ntelezi from Khayelitsha is a keen sport enthusiast who says Kgati requires fitness and flexibility, a variety of styles, coordination, and the ability to sing while jumping – all of which necessitates practice and regular training.

“Kgati, also known as ugqaphu in Xhosa, is a rope-skipping game played by a team of six players (three girls and three boys). Players skip over a rope, two players swing the rope while the others jump and you can jump in singles, doubles, triples or even four players inside the rope. You sing and dance while jumping and all songs must be traditional,” she explained.

“I started playing Kgati at school sports level (juniors), where I was selected to represent the Western Cape Province in Pretoria, Gauteng. In that tournament, we finished in position one – a gold medal, which is how I was identified for the senior team. Since then I have not stopped, and I continue training to today.”

She said this year’s games taught her about unity and celebrating diverse cultures while respecting and tolerating people from various backgrounds.

“To me, the experience was more than just sports; it was an educational experience that reminded me of my cultural roots and instilled a sense of pride in me. While I was there to compete, it was more about preserving age-old traditions and stories, which has also helped me learn and understand the social construct of different cultures and traditions within our country. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to next year's national games endeavours, which I will begin preparing for this year.”

The team finished second out of the nine provinces represented, earning a silver medal.

Abenathi was recently selected as a coach for the Western Cape province's u/14 Kgati team, which will compete in the South African School Sports Championships in Pretoria from December 9 to 15.

“This is one code where there’s growth. It is very encouraging to see development and being recognised.,” she said.

Enhancing physical education at local schools

The Sport Management Department will help to strengthen physical education in disadvantaged primary schools in the Kensington area.

The department will develop an educational module on physical education with the primary aim to build the capacity of students to work in the school environment, and provide the opportunity for school educators to improve their skills in presenting physical education as part of Life Orientation in their respective schools.

This initiative forms part of the Caring Society (CASO) 3.0 Consortium, a project that aims to improve South African healthcare through knowledge exchange.

The project will see CPUT partner with the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape and several European institutions. These include Avans University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, the Finnish Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Karel de Grote Hogeschool in Antwerp, Belgium.

CPUT lecturer Chris Young, who coordinates the programme, says they will work alongside colleagues from the Western Cape College of Nursing (WCCN), with staff members from each department focusing on specific areas of the project.

Participation in this project, which will run until 2019, allows CPUT to contribute to international knowledge development in healthcare and the community, as well as the internationalisation of students through placements abroad.

Young says the programme is part of the European Union's Erasmus+ Capacity Building in the Higher Education programme and has been funded to the tune of more than €800,000.

CPUT Staff football team secures top spot in USSA tournament

The CPUT Staff football team has expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the executive management for their support in helping the team participate and secure victory at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Staff Tournament.

The tournament was held at the University of Limpopo last week and the win brought the team their maiden trophy.

“We wish to pass our heartfelt gratitude to the executive management of CPUT for their support in helping us travel to Limpopo and fly the CPUT flag higher. We also wish to extend our message of appreciation to the following departments for their support: Sports, Arts and Culture, Advancement, and Human Capital. To all the colleagues who kept checking on us while we were away, thanks for the support and we appreciate you for showing us love,” said the team captain, Mvelo Siyaya.

The coach and Secretary General, Arthur Xolani, also extended his words of gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor [VC], Prof Chris Nhlapo, “for all the support he has given to us”. “From the moment we knocked on the door of the VC’s Office, we were welcomed with open arms and kindness and assisted with moral and financial support. I would also like to thank the Advancement Department, Sport, Arts, and Culture, as well as Human Capital for their kind support and contributions. And I will also thank the Marketing and Communication Department, Finance Department, Health, and Safety, and Campus Protection Services for their support and contributions,” said Xolani.

The proud coach said this victory was just the beginning, and “We should aim even higher because the sky is the limit”. He added that football is a team sport that thrives on unity and team spirit, and “we have truly excelled in that regard”. “The team really showed the spirit of oneness. I am deeply proud of all of you. We have made our mark in the history of USSA and CPUT. We will continue to develop other sporting codes and partnerships to ensure that CPUT remains at the top of the university sport.”

In welcoming the team and during the handover of the trophy to the Vice-Chancellor, Nhlapo said: “Whenever we present CPUT we must represent to the best of our ability… I am really impressed by this group of winners. We have to support this winning team… Thank you very much for representing for representing us well. I know that this is just the beginning, there are other sporting codes that are actually coming. But for me, health and wellness come first. It’s very important that all of us we must be sure that we live well, we exercise, we walk, and we actually destress, one of the best ways of destressing is to ensure that we play sport.”

The captain admitted that it was a difficult tournament to participate in, especially considering that it was the team’s first participation in the Staff USSA Tournament, “but our unwavering bond and determination propelled us to success”. “Other universities had great individual players, but we had a great CPUT staff soccer team. Our victory serves as a testament to the power of teamwork, perseverance, and a shared vision of unity.”

To prepare for the tournament they played in the Institution’s Res League and participated in tournaments that were organised for students by the Central Student Representative Council. Such tournaments helped the team to gain fitness and to identify areas of improvement within the team. They also played several friendly matches with the University of the Western Cape, the University of Cape Town, and Stellenbosch University to prepare for this tournament.

“I feel extremely happy to captain this team of winners and the excitement is the same for everyone within the team. This victory is a symbol that together we can achieve greater things. The team holds a larger vision - one of promoting unity and collaboration among staff members through the power of sport. Our goal extends far beyond the confines of the football pitch. We aim to foster a sense of belonging and oneness among colleagues from all corners of the university,” Siyaya enthused.

Upbeat FNB CPUT targets playoffs

After leading the FNB CPUT to a 41-10 triumph over their nemesis, FNB University Fort Hare (UFH) in the opening round of FNB Varsity Shield 2025, coach, Alastair Theys, now fancies an outside chance of a spot in the promotional playoffs.

After FNB CPUT roared on home turf, Bellville Stadium, on Friday evening, Theys said their ambitions for the year were to do better than last year, “but we're not promising anything huge, but we want to be in a better space than we have done last year in the tournament”. Prior to last year, the team played in four finals in four tournaments in a row and last year the team almost got relegated, “so our mindset is just getting to a better place, better space and then take it game by game and then hopefully we make [it to the] playoffs and then once you are in a playoffs anything can happen in the playoffs.”

Reflecting on the game against UFH, the thrilled mentor said that was a match that they were looking forward to as the first game of the tournament. “The big aim for us was just to make sure that we started the tournament in a better space than we did last year and the game was tough, Fort Hare is always a physical side, but I think what played in our favour is that we kept the tempo of the game at our pace.” The team started well, especially in the first 20 minutes, and in the 20 minutes after halftime, the hosts came out blazing as well.

The team started their rigorous preparation two weeks before the tournament, focusing on themselves and UFH “because the pre-season was based on self-improvement and self-development and making sure that the team was in the right place beside all the higher education current challenges [in South Africa]. “We started focusing on the first game on Fort Hare”. “I mean we managed to get some footage of their friendly games so we could analyse them and know how, where and what areas to play against them which worked in our favour as well.”

The players and coaching staff’s efforts and the hunger to start the tournament well were the cornerstones for the big win. “The keywords were effort and execution which I think we can't take away from the players that put a big effort in going into the game. From an execution perspective, we executed well but not well enough or not as well as we wanted.”

The coaching staff and players are happy about the good start and the victory and “the way we handled the victory, but I always say to the guys to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. “It was only the first game of the tournament, but it was very important for us to start the tournament on the front foot, and because of the way our tournament has been last year, so getting a good start this year was very important for us.”

In the morning, following their sweet victory against their nemesis, UFH the Theys troops put on their boots in preparation for their next game against the FNB Sol Plaatje University (SPU). “The boys came in and they have done the review and they've done their recovery and medicals so that last night, Monday they could get the ball rolling.”

“From a preparation perspective going into the SPU game, they have also done well as well as they beat UKZN, and they [SUP] play a similar game to CPUT, but we'll be ready going down to Kimberly.”

Bulelani Mlakalaka, Sport Development Officer, said the match against UFH was one that they took “extremely seriously and personally because we did not get the outcome the last time around in the Eastern Cape”. “The coaching staff is pleased with the path we are taking, but we have identified some faults that we will address for the upcoming away game against SPU. Defensively, the boys showed up and put their bodies on the line, and the points conceded reflect this. On offense, we can be more clinical, which will lead to more scoring possibilities. With all of the hurdles the squad has faced over the last three months, we are pleased with the guys' performance on Friday, but there is still space for development”.

“We can undoubtedly attribute appetite to being back on the winning side and a sense of new beginnings. The last time our boys won a game was probably in February [last year], so we had a tough shield and an even tougher league last year.”

CPUT's crucial top-of-the-log clash with SPU will be on 21 February at 5 pm.

Sport Management lecturer presents cutting-edge research to Parliament

“It’s important that CPUT continues to support innovative researchers. This firmly establishes our university as a knowledge resource - not only for our students but for industry and our nation. “ So says Brendon Knott, Senior Lecturer in the Sport Management Department, who was recently invited to present his research before the Tourism Portfolio Committee in Parliament. Knott was joined by CPUT colleague Prof Kamilla Swart of the Centre for Tourism Research in Africa (CETRA) who also presented at the Tourism Summit.

“Being invited to this summit helped to raise awareness for CPUT’s research profile and specifically links us with applied research that is useful for policy and decision-makers.
It was also an opportunity to showcase some of the relevant and cutting-edge research that CPUT is producing. Prof Swart and I were welcomed and accepted by the Committee and our presentations appeared to be valued”, said Knott.

His presentation was based on his current PhD, which focuses on the nation-branding legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup for South Africa. Undertaken through the University of Bournemouth in the United Kingdom, the first part of his fieldwork surveyed 561 international visitors in Cape Town and Durban during last year’s World Cup. Knott wanted to find out what their perceptions of the South African brand were before they arrived in the country, and then, having experienced South Africa first-hand, if and how these perceptions changed. His findings were quite significant, says Knott.  “Many visitors did not have clear perceptions before they came, but now were very positive about certain aspects, such as the natural beauty of the country and the friendliness of South Africans. Most visitors even rated the country as a safe place to visit; where safety was a major concern prior to the event.”

Knott gave the Committee recommendations on the use of future mega-events, and smaller home-grown events which could be used to leverage the nation-branding impact of the 2010 event for the country. He also highlighted the need for greater collaboration and co-ordination between government departments in sharing the responsibility for nation-branding.

When asked what kind of initiatives and partnerships his department currently has with industry, Knott said: “I represented the department in a few group research projects (mostly through CETRA) that helped the City of Cape Town and the Provincial Government with their preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. I also attended the Provincial 2010 Technical Committee meetings leading up to the event. Apart from this, the Sport Management Department has strong links with sports federations, including provincial rugby and cricket bodies, football associations and other sport development organisations”.

Knott believes as long as the research focus is current and relevant for industry, then prestigious invitations to speak at and advise Parliament will continue to happen.

Table Tennis Stars

CPUT’s Table Tennis team is defending their title at the University Sports South Africa Tournament, which takes place this week.

The team, managed by Llweyln Le Kay scooped first place in last year’s tournament and are positive that they will once again bring home the gold.

“We have a very strong team this year,” says Le Kay.

Taking place at the National Institute of Higher Education in Kimberley, this year’s event has attracted some of South Africa best university table tennis players.

But the CPUT team is well prepared for the week-long event.

The team followed a stringent training programme during the past few weeks, which was overseen by coach and former CPUT table tennis team player, Rudwin Gertze.

Gertze says the team performed well during their recent league games and also in a number of friendly matches.

“I am sure that they will do well this year,” says Gertze.

Team member Kirshwan Stein, who has been playing table tennis for the past 11 years, says the team is looking forward to showing-off their skills at the tournament.
