Know your CPUT: Campus Protection Services

Ensuring the security and safety of staff and students on campus is a top priority at CPUT.

The university has an active Campus Protection Services (CPS) that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The CPS is dedicated to safeguarding the university community and its property while maintaining order in accordance with university policies. They work in shifts that cover all campuses, ensuring that assistance is available at all times.

The CPS follows a straightforward yet comprehensive approach to campus security and safety. Its mission is to provide integrated and coordinated professional, effective, and efficient risk management and protection services to the students, staff, and visitors of CPUT. In exceptional circumstances, PSD personnel are authorized to take appropriate action necessary to maintain stability, safety, and security on campus.

Know your CPUT: Division of Student Affairs

Dr Melanie Swanson from the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) has encouraged first-year students to embrace the differences between university and high school.

Swanson emphasised the importance of developing discipline, taking personal responsibility, and engaging in independent learning as essential skills for their academic success.

“It is important to attend classes regularly, manage your time well, meet assignment deadlines, be on time for exams/assessments, and uphold academic integrity by avoiding plagiarism. Know how and where to access academic support such as tutors, writing centres, and lecturers,” she emphasised.

“We want to encourage first-year students to respect diversity, join clubs or societies, build positive friendships, and avoid peer pressure and risky behaviour. Becoming familiar with campus policies, including those related to gender-based violence (GBV), misconduct, pregnancy, HIV, etc, is essential.”

She continued: “Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, especially before exams or homesick, is normal. Student support services such as counselling, campus health, or any other support services are confidential, and asking for help shows strength, not weakness.”

Swanson urged the students to develop digital skills, including using Blackboard, OPA, practicing professional email etiquette, accessing academic resources, maintaining cybersecurity awareness, and following campus safety protocols.

“We encourage disciplined freedom. Balancing student social life with academics is crucial. Remember, university is just the start of your career readiness and future success.”

It is important to note that the HIV/AIDS Unit has been renamed the Student Engagement Development & Training Unit (SEDTU). The following policies apply to student support services within the Division of Student Affairs (DSA):

Know Your CPUT – Campuses

CPUT has five well-positioned campuses – ranging from the District Six campus in the Cape Town city centre to the Wellington Campus in the heart of the Boland.

The Bellville Campus is the administrative hub of the institution and its face brick façade, designed by architect Revel Fox, is well-known. Some of the landmark buildings include the Dome of Remembrance and the Major Sports Hall, where thousands of students celebrate their graduation every year.

Table Mountain serves as a backdrop to the picturesque District Six Campus. Formerly known as the Cape Town campus, it was renamed to District Six campus in 2018 – in memory of the rich heritage of District Six and acknowledging the pain that was caused when the then Cape Technikon was built on the site. The campus boasts state-of-the-art academic facilities and the piazza is a popular gathering place for students.

Wellington campus is dotted with beautiful historic buildings. The campus offers a range of courses in the Faculties of Applied Sciences, Business as well as Education.

Mowbray Campus plays a crucial role in shaping the next generation of teachers, contributing significantly to the Western Cape’s education sector. Located on Highbury Road, just a stone’s throw from Mowbray’s bustling Main Road, the campus boasts modern lecture halls, and dedicated study areas with computer access.

With its prime seafront location, the Granger Bay Campus is home to the renowned Cape Town Hotel School, the oldest in the city, as well as to the Maritime Engineering Department and the cutting-edge Survival Centre. The main attraction of the campus is the stylish Hotel School Restaurant, which features uninterrupted sea views, a Show Kitchen and sophisticated Alumni Cocktail Bar and Coffee Lounge.

The university also has three satellite campuses – Newlands, Groote Schuur and Roeland Street.

Other satellite campuses include the Media City building on the Foreshore and Roeland Street which is a few short minutes from the Cape Town campus.

Media City is home to students and staff of the Architecture, Town and Regional Planning, and Interior Design schools. Know Your CPUT: Myclassroom

At CPUT students and lecturers have access to a wide range of interactive online learning tools, thanks to Myclassroom.

A Learner Management System (LMS) system, Myclassroom allows students to complete online test and assignments. The system also provides students access to blogs, journals, discussion forums as well as online group work forums.

Facilitated by the Centre for e-Learning, Myclassroom is a safe learning environment, providing students with the option to integrate their social media environments. Students then have the option to filter information and set privacy settings to make a clear distinction between their personal and academic profiles.

In addition to Myclassroom, different departments are also integrating technology into the learning environment.

For example, some students can look forward to working with tablets and apps, while others will have access to video recordings and podcasts of lectures.

Myclassroom can be accessed at http://myclassroom.cput.ac.za.

The more creative-minded student is catered for with drama, voice artists and a vibrant student media unit that has its own radio station.

A variety of clubs and associations are always planning new ventures and looking for fresh members. The best way to stay connected to everything Student Affairs is doing, is to like their Facebook page or to follow them on Twitter.

Know your CPUT: HIV/ AIDS Unit

Students at CPUT can count on a reliable service for their wellness needs from the HIV/AIDS Unit.

The unit aims to prevent, control and manage HIV/Aids, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and TB among students and staff.

It works hand in hand with Student Counselling, Campus Health Clinics and the Disability Unit towards the holistic well-being of all students.

The unit runs awareness campaigns, research and community outreach programmes and provides peer education, care and support. It also has a Wellness Mobile Unit.

“We are proud of our Wellness Mobile Unit that makes it possible to reach our different campuses throughout the year, bringing healthcare services to your doorstep,” says head of the unit Melanie Marais.

“In addition to these existing roles, we are involved in curriculum integration of HIV/AIDS, STI and TB.”

The unit will also participate in the three-week orientation program that will see them run HIV counselling and testing campaigns across all campuses.

“Our encouragement to you is to support our services throughout the year, get to know your HIV status, practise safe sex and most importantly enjoy your time here,” says Marais.

For more information visit the unit at the Cape Town Campus, Administration Building, 2ndfloor or contact the office at +27 21 460 4253, +27 21 460 4252 or 021 959 6898.

You can also follow the unit’s activities on Facebook or Twitter.
